Evangelische Laienspielgruppen führten in den 1920er Jahren nicht nur Krippenspiele auf, sondern auch Theaterstücke wie Hugo von Hofmannsthals Jedermann. Zunehmend wurden – inspiriert von der Jugendbewegung – Texte speziell für die Laienspielszene in verschiedenen Spielreihen veröffentlicht, die eine thematische Vielfalt entwickelten. Im 'Dritten Reich' existierte das evangelische Laienspiel weiter, wenn auch mit starken Einschränkungen. In der Nachkriegszeit wurden in den Stücken neben biblischen Motiven auch Kriegserlebnisse und die Schuldfrage thematisiert und es wurde so jedermanns Welt auf die Bühne getragen. In der Untersuchung werden u.a. die Münchener Laienspiele und die Christlichen Gemeindespiele fokussiert, aber auch Stücke von Ernst Lange oder auch Das Spiel von der Weißen Rose bis hin zu den sogenannten Anspielen. Als prägende Persönlichkeiten treten u.a. Rudolf Mirbt, Otto Salomon, Aurel von Jüchen und Ulrich Kabitz auf. Korrespondenzen des Verlegers Albert Lempp und Zeitzeugenberichte beleuchten die Entwicklungen.

Austria's renowned Salzburg Festival has from the outset engaged issues of cultural identity in a country that has difficulty coming to terms with its twentieth-century history. That this is the case was especially apparent in 1999, when the Austrian president opened the festival with a speech attacking its profile under the direction of Gerard Mortier and calling for a return to the ideals of its spiritual founder, Hugo von Hofmannsthal. This proved the opening shot in a renewed debate about the direction of the Festival, which is in fact a debate about the identity of Austria itself. The issues posed foreshadowed the uproar that erupted several months later when Joerg Haider's right-wing Freedom Party joined a coalition with the conservative People's Party, wresting control of the government from the Socialists and provoking the wrath of Austria's partners within the European Union. What accounts for the profound intellectual and cultural ambivalences that have characterized Austrian history in the twentieth century?In this highly regarded book, Michael P. Steinberg investigates the goals and meanings of the Salzburg Festival from its origins in the wake of defeat in World War I and the collapse of the Habsburg Empire. At the heart of his analysis is the problem of "nationalist cosmopolitanism," which he sees as a central element of German and Austrian culture from the period of the German enlightenment on. Er heiratet Gertrud Schlesinger und bezieht in Rodaun ein Barockschlösschen, das heute Hofmannsthal-Schlösschen genannt wird. Er pflegt zahlreiche Freundschaften zu Kulturschaffenden, darunter Max Reinhard, Harry Graf Kessler, Thomas Mann und Aristide Maillol. 40-jährig nimmt er als Offizier im Kriegsfürsorgeamt teil und schreibt propagandistische Texte und hält patriotische Reden. Der Untergang der Donaumonarchie trifft den konservativen Edlen schwer. In den Jahren nach 1919 wird er drei Mal für den Nobelpreis für Literatur vorgeschlagen, erhält ihn jedoch nie. Am 15. Juli 1929 stirbt mit Hugo von Hofmannsthal ein berühmter Repräsentant der Wiener Moderne an einem Schlaganfall.

Hugo von Hofmannsthal had a lifelong fascination with the theatrum mundi topos. Judith Beniston analyses his changing responses to it against an unfamiliar backdrop - the revival of Catholic drama which, from the 1890s onwards, accompanied the rise of Austria's Christian Social party. The solipsism of `Jung Wien' and the conservative modernism of the Salzburg Festival are juxtaposed with the career of Richard von Kralik (1852-1934), the key figure in Austria's Catholic literary culture from 1890 to 1934. This study offers close readings of Das kleine Welttheater and Das Salzburger grosse Welttheater, and explores the ramifications of the fascination with the notion of Welttheater which Hofmannsthal and Kralik shared. In juxtaposing elite and popular culture, Beniston sheds new light on a neglected aspect of Austrian cultural history, on the selectivity of Hofmannsthal's approach towards Austria's Baroque tradition, and on the difficulties he faced in his attempt to assimilate his own work into it.
