Pada 1978, HendardiÑyang masih Òanak bawangÓ di Institut Teknologi BandungÑterkaget-kaget dengan keberanian para seniornya mengeluarkan pernyataan politik: tidak menghendaki lagi Soeharto sebagai Presiden Indonesia. Penangkapan dan penahanan terhadap para pemimpin dan ratusan aktivis mahasiswa pun terjadi. Kampus diduduki tentara dan ÒdinormalkanÓ, rektor ITB dicopot dan diganti dengan rektorium. Perangkat Badan Koordinasi Kemahasiswaan ditanamkan untuk menggencet kebebasan berorganisasi atau berserikat. Itulah Òmedan pertempuran awalÓ Hendardi, tempat dia memperoleh pendidikan dan pengalaman politik secara langsung. Pengalaman tersebut membentuk perjalanan hidup selanjutnya. Dia memutuskan berkecimpung di bidang pembelaan hukum dan hak asasi manusiaÑmeski berlatar belakang pendidikan teknik sipil. Mulai dari keterlibatannya dalam Komite Pembelaan Mahasiswa, Lembaga Bantuan Hukum Bandung, Yayasan Lembaga Bantuan Hukum Indonesia (YLBHI), Perhimpunan Bantuan Hukum dan Hak Asasi Manusia Indonesia (PBHI), hingga Setara Institute. Dia membela aktivis mahasiswa yang ditahan aparat negara secara semenamena, petani yang lahannya diambil alih secara paksa, hingga tahanan politik seperti Xanana Gusmao. Berkat kiprahnya, Hendardi memperoleh penghargaan dari organisasi HAM terkemuka di Amerika Serikat, Human Rights Watch. Buku ini memuat percik-percik gagasan Hendardi yang ditulis di sejumlah media nasional. Dengan jernih dia mengupas berbagai persoalan dan tantangan terkait penegakan hak asasi manusia, negara hukum, dan kehidupan kebangsaan. Meski ditulis dalam rentang 1990Ð2000, banyak gagasannya masih relevan bagi Indonesia hari ini.

Pembangunan kerap kali berseberangan dengan hak asasi manusia. Troubled Transit considers the situation of asylum seekers stuck in limbo in Indonesia from a number of perspectives. It presents not only the narratives of many transit migrants but also the perceptions of Indonesian authorities and of representatives of international and non-government organizations responsible for the care of transiting asylum seekers. Fascinated by the extraordinary and seemingly limitless resilience shown by asylum seekers during their often lengthy and dangerous journeys, the author highlights one particular fragment of their journeys — their time in Indonesia, which many expect to be the last stepping stone to a new life. While they long for their new life to unfold, most asylum seekers become embroiled in the complexities of living in transit. Indonesia, a vast archipelago of more than 17,000 islands, is more than a location where people spend time waiting; it is a nation state that interacts with transiting asylum seekers and formulates policies that have a profound impact on their experience in transit there. Troubled Transit tries to explain the complexities faced by the transiting migrants within the context of the Indonesian government and its political challenges, including its relationship with Australia. The Australia-centric view of recent asylum seeker issues has tended to ignore the larger socio-political context of the migratory routes and the perspectives of transit states towards asylum seekers stuck in transit. This book hopes to direct the Australia-centric gaze northwards to take Indonesian policies and policymaking into account, thereby giving Indonesia more relevance as a transit country and as an important partner in regional protection schemes and migration management. Even though some Indonesian policies and practices are less than favourable for asylum seekers, and even reprehensible from a human rights perspective, more attention must be paid to ongoing developments that impact on transiting asylum seekers in Indonesia if any of the hardships they suffer there are to be alleviated.

In a sweeping reconsideration of the relation between religion and modernity, Jose Casanova surveys the roles that religions may play in the public sphere of modern societies. During the 1980s, religious traditions around the world, from Islamic fundamentalism to Catholic liberation theology, began making their way, often forcefully, out of the private sphere and into public life, causing the "deprivatization" of religion in contemporary life. No longer content merely to administer pastoral care to individual souls, religious institutions are challenging dominant political and social forces, raising questions about the claims of entities such as nations and markets to be "value neutral", and straining the traditional connections of private and public morality. Casanova looks at five cases from two religious traditions (Catholicism and Protestantism) in four countries (Spain, Poland, Brazil, and the United States). These cases challenge postwar—and indeed post-Enlightenment—assumptions about the role of modernity and secularization in religious movements throughout the world. This book expands our understanding of the increasingly significant role religion plays in the ongoing construction of the modern world.
