Lebih dari lebih dari 20.000 manuskrip dari Indonesia disimpan oleh Perpustakaan Universitas Leiden, Belanda. Hal ini disebutkan pada sebuah diskusi bertema “Mutiara yang Terabaikan dalam Manuskrip Indonesia” pada 11 September 2017 bersama Dick van der Meij (Peneliti Independen) dan Peter Worsley (Profesor dari Universitas Sydney) di Perpustakaan Universitas Leiden, Belanda. Jumlah yang sangat melimpah itu, belum lagi jika mempertimbangkan manuskrip yang ada di PNRI, keraton-keraton, pesantren-pesantren, dan di tangan pribadi, memberikan sebuah harapan besar. Informasi yang dikandung manuskrip sebanyak itu tentu akan mampu menyingkap sejarah tentang jati diri bangsa kepulauan ini. Namun sayangnya, sebagaimana disimpulkan dari diskusi itu, sebagian besar koleksi tersebut jarang sekali diakses. Bahkan mayoritas belum pernah dikaji sama sekali, kecuali untuk kepentingan katalogisasi. Barangkali permasalahan yang sangat pelik, misalnya, adalah aksara dan bahasa dari sejumlah besar koleksi tersebut sudah lama mati. Buku ini berusaha untuk mengungkap sebagian kecil dari khasanah manuskrip Islam Indonesia yang tersimpan di manuskrip-manuskrip Islam Nusantara. Harapan saya buku ini ikut andil dalam membuat jalan keluar dalam gua kajian manuskrip Islam Nusantara yang nampaknya masih buntu, agar cahaya pemahaman dapat masuk menerangi ruang agung kepribadian bangsa ini dari jalur naskah-naskah peninggalannya.

Buku ini menelusuri kembali konstruksi dialogis dari apa yang oleh para intelektual Bali disebut sebagai “kebalian”, yang mereka anggap sebagai pohon, yang akarnya adalah agama, batangnya adalah adat, dan budaya sebagai buahnya. Gerakan perenungan identitas ini berawal dari penaklukan Pulau Bali dan integrasinya ke dalam pemerintah kolonial Hindia Belanda pada awal abad XX. Gerakan ini hidup kembali setelah kemerdekaan Indonesia, ketika orang Bali harus berjuang keras agar agama mereka diakui oleh negara. Dengan begitu, para reformis Bali berhasil mendefinisikan identitas etnis mereka dalam kaitannya dengan agama Hindu, meskipun mereka harus merelakan agama mereka dirampas agar agama itu dapat diakui. Hinduisasi praktik-praktik keagamaan mereka ini telah menyulut konflik yang berulang antara orang Bali yang ingin melestarikan kekhasan tradisi leluhur mereka dan orang Bali yang berhasrat mereformasi tradisi leluhur ini, menyesuaikan dengan gagasan mereka tentang hinduisme. Jadi, pertanyaannya bukanlah menentukan apakah orang Bali beragama Hindu, jika dahulunya beragama Hindu, bahkan bukan pula jika mereka sedang menjadi Hindu. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah, pertama, untuk menjelaskan sejumlah alasan mengapa orang Bali menjadikan agama Hindu sebagai penanda diakritik “kebalian” mereka dan, kedua, untuk menguraikan berbagai pembentukan ulang identitas yang dihasilkan.

Indonesian Islam is often portrayed as being intrinsically moderate by virtue of the role that mystical Sufism played in shaping its traditions. According to Western observers--from Dutch colonial administrators and orientalist scholars to modern anthropologists such as the late Clifford Geertz--Indonesia's peaceful interpretation of Islam has been perpetually under threat from outside by more violent, intolerant Islamic traditions that were originally imposed by conquering Arab armies. The Makings of Indonesian Islam challenges this widely accepted narrative, offering a more balanced assessment of the intellectual and cultural history of the most populous Muslim nation on Earth. Michael Laffan traces how the popular image of Indonesian Islam was shaped by encounters between colonial Dutch scholars and reformist Islamic thinkers. It is a great grief to me that he who took such an intense interest in my work has not lived to see its conclusion. It was he who in the beginning urged me to venture upon this course of study and whose encouragement helped me in moments of de spondency. The high standard which, with his keen and critical judgment, he set for his own work, was an example to me, and I shall strive to maintain it in my future studies. Not only did he help me to lay the foundation of my knowledge of archive science, but he was also my guide in a field new to me in many respects, that of Asian maritime trade.
