"Jennie C. Jones recent exhibitions often feature an amalgam of painting, sound and sculpture.... She manipulates everyday objects related to sound--objects that belong to modes and systems of listening to sound or producing it as well as systems of organizing it--to generate implied sound. And while her sculptures evoke sound and the methodologies by which it is created, they are themselves silent"--Page 15.

Jones' multisensory art ingeniously weaves connections between Minimalism, music and the Black avant-garde This volume explores the interdisciplinary practice of Hudson-based artist Jennie C. Jones (born 1968), which moves viewers through both visual and auditory engagement. Aurally altering the spaces in which her paintings, sculptures and installations are on view, Jones' work encourages viewers to anticipate sound even in the quietest of environments. As she explains, "I always say [the artworks are] active even when there's no sound in the room; they are affecting the subtlest of sounds in the space--dampening and absorbing even the human voice." Conceptually, Jones' practice reflects on the legacies of modernism and Minimalism while underscoring the connection between Minimalism and music, illuminating the influence of the Black avant-garde. Bringing this multisensory experience to book form, Jones unites documentation of recent exhibitions--including Dynamics, her expansive show at the Guggenheim Museum (2022)--with excerpts of text, poetry and conversations to create a "score" that reveals the layers of Jones' artwork. Part artist's book and part primer, this lyrical volume unfolds in movements, like a printed and bound evening of poetry, prose and music.

Endless Shout written by Fred Moten and has been published by Inventory Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-05-21 with Art categories.

Endless Shout asks how, why and where performance and improvisation can take place inside a museum. The book documents a six-month series of experimental performances organized by the Institute of Contemporary Art, University of Pennsylvania, where five participants--Raúl de Nieves, Danielle Goldman, George Lewis, The Otolith Group and taisha paggett--collectively led a series of improvisation experiments. These include Miya Masaoka's A Line Becomes a Circle, which pays tribute to Shiki Masaoka, a subversive Japanese haiku writer; jumatatu m. poe and Jerome "Donte" Beacham's Let 'im Move You, addressing the history of J-Sette, a dance form popularized at historically black colleges; and A Recital for Terry Admins by composer George Lewis. The book includes an essay by curator Anthony Elms, conversations with Jennie C. Jones and Wadada Leo Smith on themes of rhythm, rehearsal and improvisation, plus new works created specifically for the book, such as a script by The Otolith Group on blackness and digital color correction.

Ruffneck Constructivists written by Kara Elizabeth Walker and has been published by Dancing Foxes Press/Institute of Contemporary Art, University of Pennsylvania this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014 with African American art categories.

"Ruffneck Constructivists," published to accompany a group exhibition curated by artist Kara Walker, brings together 11 international artists in order to define a contemporary manifesto of urban architecture and change. Inspired by both the Russian Constructivists and McLyte's 1993 hit song "Ruffneck," the phrase "Ruffneck Constructivists" evokes thuggishness as an expression of abjection. The book features sculpture, photography and video by the artists Dineo Seshee Bopape, Kendell Geers, Arthur Jafa, Jennie C. Jones, Kahlil Joseph, Deana Lawson, Rodney McMillian, Pope.L, Tim Portlock, Lior Shvil and Szymon Tomsia. As Walker states, "Ruffneck Constructivists are defiant shapers of environments. Whatever their gender affiliation, Ruffnecks go hard when all around them they see weakness, softness, compromise, sermonizing, poverty, and lack; they don't change the world through conscious actions, instead they build themselves into the world one assault at a time."
