Wer vielen Zielen zugleich nachstrebt, Hiuft Gefahr, kein ein ziges zu erreichen. Der Verfasser ware geme der Entwicklung des Philosophen Levinas im einzelnen nachgegangen. Er hatte geme die Beziehungen von dessen Denken zu der Philosophie Spinozas, Descartes', Kants, Bubers und Franz Rosenzweigs zum Gegen stand besonderer Studien gemacht. Er hatte am liebsten das ge samte Schrifttum von Levinas in seine Betrachtungen einbezo gen. Dies alles ware moglich gewesen - aber nicht gleichzeitig, nicht im Rahmen ein und derselben Publikation. Es galt daher, eine Wahl zu treffen. 1m Hinblick auf die Tatsache, daB Emma nuel Levinas im deutschsprachigen Raum noch vollig unbekannt ist, hat der Verfasser den EntschluB gefaBt, ein einfuhrendes Werk zu schreiben. Er hat seine Aufgabe darin gesehen, den deutschsprachigen Leser mit Levinas' urspriinglicher und tief sinniger, aber schwer zuganglicher Philosophie vertraut zu ma chen. Darum hat er zahlreiche Publikationen von Levinas, die exegetischer und literarischer Art sind oder sich auf Einzel personlichkeiten und Ereignisse der Zeit beziehen, nur insofeme beriicksichtigt, als sie geeignet sind, das philosophische Anliegen zu verdeutlichen. Professor H. L. Van Breda had hoped to write this preface, but his recent, unexpected and untimely death has left that task in my hands. Although my remarks will not be as eloquent and insightful as his surely would have been, some few words are clearly in order here; for the phenomenological community has not only lost the leadership of Fr. Van Breda these last years, but also the scholarship and leadership of Aron Gurwitsch and Alden Fisher - both contributors to this volume - as well as that of Dorion Cairns and John Wild. Our leaders are fewer now but Herbert Spiegelberg is still very obviously one of them. This volume thus presents the work of some of the past and presently recognized leaders in phenomenology - e. g. Gurwitsch, Straus, and Fisher - but, more important perhaps, it also presents the work of some of those who are sure to be future leaders of our community of phenomenological philosophers, if in fact they have not already achieved this status. Most, if not all, of the contribu tors to this volume are in some way or another indebted to Herbert Spiegelberg and his work in phenomenology.

Denn wissen wir nicht alle, was mit Tod bezeichnet wird? Er ist das Ende des Lebens, er ist ‚je nach Glauben’, das Tor zum Nichts, der Übergang in ein Jenseits oder der Durchgang zu einer Wiederkehr. Für jeden ist seine eigene Vorstellung vom Tod ganz selbstverständlich. Das ändert sich, wenn gefragt wird, was es heißen kann den Tod zu verstehen, wenn Verstehen nicht einem theoretischen, abstrakten Wissen entspricht, sondern, wie Heidegger ausführt, ein sich verstehen auf, ein sein können oder das im Verstehen Gekonnte ist. Damit verändert sich die Perspektive auf den Tod. Er ist nun nicht mehr etwas Fernes, das irgendwann als Ereignis eintritt, denn sein können ist nichts Fernes, sondern etwas, das ich sein kann oder bin. Es geht daher um Sein. Mit dem Den-ken an den Tod ist immer auch die Vorstellung der Zeit gegeben. Meist als Vorstel-lung von Zeit, die zu Ende geht, von noch verbleibender Zeit, von Zeit, die noch aus-steht. Der Tod macht die Zeitlichkeit offenbar. Es geht demzufolge auch um Zeit. Sein und Zeit In dieser Arbeit wird die Frage beantwortet, warum sich im Sein zum Tode das mögliche Ganzsein des Daseins enthüllt. Wie sich diese Ganzheit zeigt und inwiefern die Ganzheit die Struktur des Daseins in einen zeitlichen Horizont zu stellen vermag. Die Arbeit gliedert sich in zwei Hauptteile, der erste Teil ist der Darstellung des Annliegens von Sein und Zeit, seiner philosophischen Methode und der Klärung zentraler Begriffe der Daseinsanalyse vorbehalten. Hierbei werden die Begriffe vor allem im Hinblick auf das Thema der Arbeit entfaltet. Der zweite Teil thematisiert das Sein zum Tode. Gefragt wird nach der Erfahrbarkeit des Todes, nach dem möglichen Ganzsein des Daseins und ob das Sein zum Tode, in seiner Ganzheit, die ausgzeichnete Möglichkeit des Ergreifens des eigentlichen Seinkönnens darstellt.

Ins Zentrum der kritischen Revision rückt das erste Hauptwerk von 1927, »Sein und Zeit«, das nahezu unangefochten als epochaler Beitrag zur Philosophie des 20. Jahrhunderts gilt. Die »Schwarzen Hefte« fordern eine »Destruktion« dieses Werks auch insofern heraus, als die dort präsentierten Selbstinterpretationen das philosophische Profil dieses Denkens schärfen und neue Gesichtspunkte für die Diskussion seiner Substanz im philosophischen und ideologischen Kontext des 20. Jahrhunderts eröffnen. 90 Jahre nach seinem Erscheinen stellt sich der philosophischen Forschung die kritische Auseinandersetzung mit »Sein und Zeit« als unabweisbare Aufgabe. The act of thought-thought as an act-would precede the thought thinking or becoming conscious of an act. The notion of act involves a violence essentially: the violence of transitivity, lacking in the transcendence of thought. . . Totality and Infinity The work of Emmanuel Levinas revolves around two preoccupations. First, his philosophical project can be described as the construction of a formal ethics, grounded upon the transcendence of the other human being and a subject's spontaneous responsibility toward that other. Second, Levinas has written extensively on, and as a member of, the cultural and textual life of Judaism. These two concerns are intertwined. Their relation, however, is one of considerable complexity. Levinas' philosophical project stems directly from his situation as a Jewish thinker in the twentieth century and takes its particular form from his study of the Torah and the Talmud. It is, indeed, a hermeneutics of biblical experience. If inspired by Judaism, Levinas' ethics are not eo ipso confessional. What his ethics takes from Judaism, rather, is a particular way of conceiving transcendence and the other human being. It owes to the philosophy of Franz Rosenzweig and Martin Buber a logos of the world and of the holy, which acknowledges their incom mensurability without positing one as fallen and the other as supernal.
