In this work, Keller reviews the short stories by his fellow author Jeremias Gotthelf that appeared at length between 1849 and 1855 in Brockhaus' sheets for literary entertainment . After Keller's death, Baechtold brought the four treatises together, including their postscript commenting on Gotthelf's death, in the order in which they appeared and gave the whole thing the title “Jeremias Gotthelf”. This work is important because it is a main source for Keller's views on poetry and the political and social responsibility of the poet.

When she had taken her seat she felt a sense of security, as though she were seated by her guardian angel; and a sort of foretaste of eternal peace and safety came over her. When the singing ceased, the pastor began to pray, and the congregation rose. Anna was too content to wish to move; she was thinking what a joy it must be to enter heaven, and how awful to be turned away from the golden gates and sent into the midst of weeping and gnashing of teeth. At the very thought of this her heart shuddered as though a burning blast had swept across it. The days long past arose before her, and then the late unhappy period; the former radiant with joy and satisfaction, the latter clouded with grief and gloom; and again she seemed to realize what it must be to pass from the gates of heaven to hell. There was she, about to return presently from that church, where all was peace, to the discord and torments of her home--to a misery to which she could see no end. And she must return alone; not one of those around her would accompany her: there would be no poor woman there to point her to a peaceful spot; she would be thrown into the midst of strife, --a strife not proceeding from bad harvests or ending with bad years, but arising from embittered spirits, and lasting as long as this bitterness lasts; sometimes as long as these embittered souls themselves last--that is, eternally.
