“The king’s son made a vow that he would never marry any but the one whom the shoe fitted, whatever her rank.” When the king’s son comes to the region, the stepmother and half-sisters of The Snow-White Maiden deny her request to attend church to see the Prince. However, with the assistance of Cantrips and her Enchantment Wand, she sees the Prince and catches his eye. When he follows her, succeeds in stealing her golden shoe, and vows to marry the one it fits, her sister is willing to go to great lengths to prevent the Snow-White Maiden from enjoying her happy ever after… “If I were in your place, I would send her away to that little island over there.” Unsuccessful in her attempts to kill her stepdaughter, the Queen convinces her husband to send the daughter from his first marriage to live on an island for three years. The Maid of the Isle makes the acquaintance of three lads, whose friendship over the years help thwart her stepmother’s plans, which grow ever more desperate when a Prince comes to ask for her hand in marriage… This duo of Inner Hebridean fairytales extend beyond the traditional stories of ‘Cinderella’ and ‘Diamonds & Toads.’ Each has an episode of the Supplanted Bride or Heroine at the close of the tale, and can be enjoyed together in this new edition. Disloyal Mothers And Scurrilous Citizens written by Kathleen Kennedy and has been published by Indiana University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1999-09-22 with Social Science categories.

A concise and highly readable study of women’s influence on a crucial era in American political and cultural history. Kathleen Kennedy’s unique study explores the arrests, trials, and defenses of women charged under the Wartime Emergency Laws passed soon after the US entered World War I. These women, often members of the political left, whose anti-war or pro-labor activity brought them to the attention of federal officials, made up ten percent of the approximately two thousand Federal Espionage cases. Their trials became important arenas in which women’s relationships and obligations to national security were contested and defined. Anti-radical politics raised questions about the state’s role in defining motherhood and social reproduction. Kennedy shows that state authorities often defined women’s subversion as a violation of their maternal roles. Yet, with the exception of Kate Richards O’Hare, the women charged with sedition did not define their political behavior within the terms set by maternalism. Instead, they used liberal arguments of equality, justice, and democratic citizenship to argue for their right to speak frankly about American policy. Such claims, while often in opposition to strategies outlined by their defense teams, helped form the framework for modern arguments made in defense of civil liberties.

The Nazi Spy Ring In America written by Rhodri Jeffreys-Jones and has been published by Georgetown University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-09-14 with History categories.

The first full account of Nazi spies in 1930s America and how they were exposed. In the mid-1930s just as the United States was embarking on a policy of neutrality, Nazi Germany launched a program of espionage against the unwary nation. The Nazi Spy Ring in America tells the story of Hitler’s attempts to interfere in American affairs by spreading anti-Semitic propaganda, stealing military technology, and mapping US defenses. This fast-paced history provides essential insight into the role of espionage in shaping American perceptions of Germany in the years leading up to US entry into World War II. Fascinating and thoroughly researched, The Nazi Spy Ring in America sheds light on a now-forgotten but significant episode in the history of international relations and the development of the FBI. Using recently declassified documents, prize-winning historian Rhodri Jeffreys-Jones narrates this little-known chapter in US history. He shows how Germany’s foreign intelligence service, the Abwehr, was able to steal top secret US technology such as a prototype codebreaking machine and data about the latest fighter planes. At the center of the story is Leon Turrou, the FBI agent who helped bring down the Nazi spy ring in a case that quickly transformed into a national sensation. The arrest and prosecution of four members of the ring was a high-profile case with all the trappings of fiction: fast cars, louche liaisons, a murder plot, a Manhattan socialite, and a ringleader codenamed Agent Sex. Part of the story of breaking the Nazi spy ring is also the rise and fall of Turrou, whose talent was matched only by his penchant for publicity, which eventually caused him to run afoul of J. Edgar Hoover's strict codes of conduct.

'Puts Richard Kerbaj in the front rank of modern authors on espionage. It is, by turns, gripping and shocking and sheds completely new light on the most important intelligence alliance in the world' -- Tim Shipman, author of All Out War The Secret History of The Five Eyes: The untold story of the international spy network, is a riveting and exclusive narrative of the most powerful and least understood intelligence alliance, which has been steeped in secrecy since its formation in 1956. Richard Kerbaj, an award-winning investigative journalist and filmmaker, bypasses the usual censorship channels to tell the definitive account of authoritative but unauthorised stories of the Western world's most powerful but least known intelligence alliance made up of the US, Britain, Australia, Canada, and New Zealand. As Kerbaj shows, spy stories are never better than when they are true - and these span from 1930s Nazi spy rings to the most recent developments in Ukraine and China. Through personal interviews with world leaders - including British Prime Ministers Theresa May and David Cameron - and more than 100 intelligence officials, this book explores the complex personalities who helped shape the Five Eyes. They include a Scotland Yard detective who became a spymaster and inspired the first exchanges between MI5 and the FBI. An American home economics teacher who helped create one of the most effective programmes to counter Soviet espionage. The CIA's lone officer in Budapest during the Hungarian Revolution. GCHQ's chief during the Edward Snowden intelligence leak. And the Australian politician turned diplomat whose tip-off to the FBI instigated the inquiry into Russia's meddling in the US presidential contest between Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton in 2016. Richard Kerbaj is able to draw from deep inside the secret corridors of power and his unparalleled access spans all 5 countries. Some of the people he has interviewed include former GCHQ director Sir Iain Lobban, CIA director General David Petraeus, MI5 director-general Eliza Manningham-Buller, NSA director Admiral Mike Rogers, British National Security Advisor Kim Darroch, ASIO chief Mike Burgess, the Canadian Security Intelligence Service's chief Richard Fadden, and Ciaran Martin, the official who oversaw Britain's assessments on whether the Chinese telecoms firm, Huawei, should have had a role in the creation of the UK's 5G network. This page-turning book will lift the lid on spy stories from across the English-speaking world, question the future of the alliance, and our place within it.
