Is Classics still important and relevant to a Jesuit education? The answer is a resounding "Yes." Classics remains an essential component of Jesuit education. This series of essays argues and proves that Classics and Jesuit education are indivisibly intertwined. Moreover, any Jesuit school that embraces liberal arts must have Classics at the core of its curriculum.

2018 Catholic Press Association, 2nd Place: Reference Books Ignatian Pedagogy: Classic and Contemporary Texts on Jesuit Education from St. Ignatius to Today is an essential resource for anyone seeking to appreciate the origins, development, and contemporary understandings of Jesuit education. Commissioned by the Secretariat for Education of the Society of Jesus, Ignatian Pedagogy presents the principle texts—including letters from the first Jesuits, official documents of the Society of Jesus, and speeches from numerous Superior Generals—that chronicle how the Society of Jesus responded to the significant opportunities and challenges their educational apostolate faced through the centuries. Bearing witness to the creative fidelity characteristic of the Jesuit tradition, Ignatian Pedagogy offers researchers and practitioners the context and detail that demonstrate the genius of Jesuit education in its continued relevance and its ability to effectively form “people for others.”

Excerpt from The Educational System of the Jesuits The lapse of even so long a period as four centuries is not enough to place a great name beyond the reach of political or religious prejudices. Eminent men whose names are linked with institutions or modes of be lief still existing, live on in the systems they have inaugurated and stand before the bar of age after age until their influence and authority no longer are felt. But while we sit in judgment on those of previous generations, let us not forget that it is our duty as well as their right, to consider the man before us, his actions and their motives, in the light of the circum stances and times in which he lived. Excerpt from Loyola and the Educational System of the Jesuits In the following work on the Educational System of the Jesuits, I have endeavored to present a critical statement of the principles and method adopted in the Society of Jesus. The effort to explain the sources, process of development, and present influence of the system within and without the Order, has made of the first part a biographical and historical sketch, having for its chief subject the person of the Founder; while the details and the pedagogical significance of the various elements in the method appear, in the second part, as a critical analysis of the Ratio Studiorum. The educational literature which treats of this system is very extensive. Various estimates and conclusions have been arrived at, on the merits of documents frequently referred to, for an exposition of the meaning and philosophy of the system. Hence, with the view of facilitating a clear and comprehensive judgment on the subject, I have thought it not inadvisable to quote accurately from such documents, omitting none which bore upon the matter, if only they were within reach. The Way To Learn And The Way To Teach written by Joseph de Jouvancy and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-05-12 with categories.

The educational historian Robert Schwickerath called the Jesuit father Joseph de Jouvancy (1643-1719) "one of the greatest authorities on education of his age." A classical humanist and scholar known for his plays, biographies, histories, orations, and translations of various works into Latin, Jouvancy left behind no work more influential than his De discendi et docendi ratione (The Way to Learn and the Way to Teach, 1703). The Jesuit order found his work so important for maintaining quality in the Society's schools that it made it a companion piece for the great charter of Jesuit education known as the Ratio studiorum (1599). In this book, Jouvancy first describes how young instructors might effectively pursue their own studies during their years of teaching; secondly, he details the essentials of good teaching. The considerable historical interest of this book is matched by its pedagogical insights and perennial relevance.
