Excerpt from The Incarnate Saviour: A Life of Jesus Christ We endeavour to illustrate three main propositions in the following pages. First, Jesus Christ was God and man in two distinct natures and one person. His humanity was true and proper, but through it we see continually gleams of the Godhead. As the Apostle John says in the preface to his Gospel, The Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, and we beheld Hz'sglory. This glory, as we understand the words, was not merely beheld by the apostle in such great and signal manifestations as the transfiguration, the resurrection, and the ascension, - it was beheld more or less clearly even in the lowly actions and the ordinary tenor of His common life and speech. For example, we are told that after one of His miracles the disciples put the question, What manner of man is this? That He was a man they never doubted, yet ever and anon there was something which suggested He was more. The look in His face, the tone in His voice, the work of His hands, constantly startled them. Excerpt from The Life Teaching of Jesus Christ This little book makes no claim to an exhaustive treatment of its great subject, nor even to be an original contribution to it. It is intended as an outline or introduction for those who are beginning the study, and who have no special critical or theological knowledge. The aim throughout has been to summarise the results of modern investigation from the constructive standpoint, and to show that when criticism has had its perfect work enough remains for faith and devotion. The subject is one which raises many problems of which no final solution is possible in the present state of our knowledge. The writer would acknowledge his obligations to many modern writers on the period, to some of whom reference is made in these pages, and among them especially to his old teacher, Dr. Sanday of Oxford, to whom all students of the New Testament owe an incalculable debt. Excerpt from Jesus Christ the Divine Man, His Life and Times If any apology be needed for adding another to the various lives of Christ already before the public, it may be well to state how far this little book occupies any independent ground of its own. The object of the writer has been to make some small contribution to the moral and spiritual history of the Life of lives, and this in some especial relation to missionary work and the contact of Christianity with non-Christian religions. "The ethical," as Prof Kuenen well says, "is the universal human." Ethical and spiritual sequences of cause and effect have been especially before the writers mind. The Gospel history is "a history, which in every part of it," as Weiss says, "must be considered in the light of Him who transcends all history." The superhistorical relations of the historical life have been touched upon in some of their bearings upon the past, present, and future of Christianity. Even Keim, from whose point of view the present writer wholly differs, while gladly acknowledging his great ability and learning, and not infrequent reverence of tone and enthusiasm of humanity, affirms of Christ's life that it is "bounded at its circumference by the human limitations of His age, in its centre exalted above all." Such language may imply nothing but hero worship, but it is at all events a recognition of the incomparable grandeur of Christ's life and character. While the moral and spiritual aspects of the Life have been placed in the foreground, every effort has been made to present the physical and social environment briefly, yet accurately, in the light of modern research. In this connection the archaeological and geographical labours of the Palestine Exploration Society have been largely drawn upon, and the most recent records of travel, especially those of Captain Conder, Mr. Lawrence Oliphant, and Dr. Selah Merrill. Upon the whole, the greatest obligations are due to Dr. Edersheim His wealth of Rabbinical lore, his great theological erudition, his deep sympathy with Israel, springing from the strongest of all sources, the fountain of blood relationship, and his true spirituality of touch, place his work, in the writers estimate, at the head of all the contemporary literature of the subject. Excerpt from The Student's Life of Christ This Life of Jesus the Christ was written from the stand point of the teacher in the Sunday school, with a class desirous of gaining a mastery of the facts from a constructive point of view. It was originally published, chapter by chapter, in various religious weeklies. Notwithstanding the limitations imposed by this method of publication it excited an interest among many readers which seemed to justify its issue in book form for permanent use. The chapters follow closely the Bible Study Union lessons on the Life of Christ, to which they were designed to be supplemental. So representative of the best scholarship is the outline of these lessons that no practical difficulty arose to prevent its being thus followed. The formal requirement of a quarterly review lesson proved advantageous rather than otherwise. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The History of the Life and Death of Jesus Christ A. Now the first appetite man had in order to his great end was, to be as perfectas he could, that is, to be as like the best thing 'he knew as his nature and condition would permitd. And although by Adam's fancy and affection to his wife, and by God's appointing fmit for him, we see the lower appetites were first provided for; yet the first appetite which man had, as he distinguishes from lower creatures, was to be like God, (for by that the devil tempted him, ) and in order to that he had naturally sufficient instruments and abilities. For although by being abused with the devil's sophistry he chose an incompetent instrument, yet because it is naturally certain that love is the greatest assimilation of the object and the faculty, Adam by loving God might very well approach nearer Him according as he could. And it was natural to Adam to love God, who was his father, his creator, the fountain of all good to him, and of excellency in Himself; and whatsoever is understood to be such, it is as natural for us to love, and we do it for the same reasons, for which we love any thing else; and we cannot love for any other reason but for ione or both these in their proportion apprehended. Excerpt from The Life of Our Lord Jesus Christ Nothing need be said by the translator in favor of such a work. Let its title, its author's name, and the high eulogy passed upon it by the Supreme Judge of Christian truth, answer for its worth. Excerpt from How to Succeed in the Christian Life What does it mean to receive Jesus Christ? It means to take Christ to be to yourself all that God offers Him to be to everybody. Jesus Christ is God's gift. For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish but have everlasting life (john 3: Some accept this wondrous gift of God. Every one who does accept this gift becomes a Child of God. Many others refuse this wondrous gift of God, and every one who refuses this gift of God perishes. He is condemned already. He that believeth on the Son is not condemned, but he that believeth not is condemned already because he hath not believed in the name of the only be gotten Son of God (john 3.
