One of the characteristic pursuits of the current phase of historical Jesus research, the so-called Third Quest, has been the serious attempt to locate Jesus within first-century CE Judaism, to seek a Jesus who could be found plausible within his Jewish context. Comparatively less emphasis has been laid on the question as to whether or how the contextually plausible picture of Jesus also suits and accounts for the history of the reception of Jesus in early Christianity. By integrating the Jewish context, the teaching of Jesus and Christian reception history into one explanation, the continuum perspective seeks to reveal a Jesus who would both be fitting within his Jewish context and would also help to explain and understand early Christian stances. Thus, according to this perspective, a historically plausible picture of Jesus is one that can be placed in the Judaism-Christianity continuum.

These twin descendants of Hebrew heritage shared the same social, cultural, and ideological context, as well as the same minority status, in the first century of the common era. Through skillful application of social science theories to ancient Western thought, including Judaism, Hellenism, early Christianity, and a host of other sectarian beliefs, Segal reinterprets some of the most important events of Jewish and Christian life in the Roman world. For example, he finds: — That the concept of myth, as it related to covenant, was a central force of Jewish life. The rising turmoil between Jews and Christians affected the development of both rabbinic Judaism and Christianity, as each tried to preserve the partly destroyed culture of Judea by becoming a religion. Both attempted to take the best of Judean and Hellenistic society without giving up the essential aspects of Israelite life. Both spiritualized old national symbols of the covenant and practices that consolidated power after the disastrous wars with Rome. The separation between Judaism and Christianity, sealed in magic, monotheism, law, and universalism, fractured what remained of the shared symbolic life of Judea, leaving Judaism and Christianity to fulfill the biblical demands of their god in entirely different ways.

John’s Gospel is a particularly difficult text for Jewish-Christian relations. It has been described as both deeply embedded in the Judaism of its day whilst simultaneously giving the strongest sense of separation between Judaism and Christianity. Arguably the most problematic verse is John 8:44, where Jesus tells “the Jews” that they are of “their father, the devil.” This verse, as well as other parts of the Fourth Gospel, have been used to justify anti-Semitism for centuries. Cognisant of this shameful history, how should Christians read John’s Gospel with the Ioudaioi (Jewish people) in mind? After reviewing the history of separation and problematic relationships between Christians and Jews down the centuries, Jesus and the Ioudaioi introduces theories of the audience of the Gospel, and surveys interpretative strategies proposed by Jewish scholars of the New Testament, while providing model exegesis for Christians who want to remain true to their faith while being aware of the difficulties this poses for positive relationships between Christians and Jewish people.
