This project highlights Jesus' use of scripture within each Synoptic Gospel as an important component of each Gospel's narrative rhetoric. Using literary analysis—particularly composition criticism, narrative criticism, and comparative analysis—the main object of study is the explicit citation of Jesus, rather than any implied citation, allusion or echo. Concentration on the latter areas offers insight into the way scripture was understood by Christians and Jews in Second Temple Judaism, however, the study of explicit citations provides the basis upon which we assume other allusions may be heard by first century audiences. The study concludes that each Gospel offers its own distinctive portrayal of Jesus’ use of scripture based on each one’s narrative rhetoric.

Take a pilgrimage through some of the most challenging—and rewarding—parts of the Old Testament with bestselling author Philip Yancey. Because it is often daunting, many Christians approach Old Testament carefully. Or avoid it altogether. But each of the books of the Old Testament—"the Bible Jesus read"—contains an essential part of the story of grace. "The more we comprehend the Old Testament," Yancey writes, "the more we comprehend Jesus." In The Bible Jesus Read, Yancey challenges the perception that the New Testament is more important than the Old. Writing with keen insight into the human condition and God’s provision for it, he sets off on a personal journey through the parts we most like to keep at arm’s length—Job, Deuteronomy, Psalms, Ecclesiastes, and the Prophets—and he asks us to bring our own questions, concerns, and our openness to the wonders of God. We may discover that this set of writings that comprise the Old Testament is at once as mystifying and strangely satisfying as life itself—that it’s worth the effort it takes to read and wrestle with. Because reading the Scriptures that Jesus so revered gives us a profound new understanding of Christ, the Cornerstone of the new covenant.

The difficulty of interpreting the Bible is felt all over today. Is the Bible still authoritative for the faith and practice of the church? If so, in what way? What practices of reading offer the most appropriate approach to understanding Scripture? The church's lack of clarity about these issues has hindered its witness and mission, causing it to speak with an uncertain voice to the challenges of our time. This important book is for a twenty-first-century church that seems to have lost the art of reading the Bible attentively and imaginatively. The Art of Reading Scripture is written by a group of eminent scholars and teachers seeking to recover the church's rich heritage of biblical interpretation in a dramatically changed cultural environment. Asking how best to read the Bible in a postmodern context, the contributors together affirm up front "Nine Theses" that provide substantial guidance for the church. The essays and sermons that follow both amplify and model the approach to Scripture outlined in the Nine Theses. Lucidly conceived, carefully written, and shimmering with fresh insights, The Art of Reading Scripture proposes a far-reaching revolution in how the Bible is taught in theological seminaries and calls pastors and teachers in the church to rethink their practices of using the Bible. Reading Through Matthew, Encountering God is the first book by William Burch. He was born in North Hollywood, California in 1971, the second of 2 sons born to James and Rosa Burch. In 1977, the Burch family moved to Daleville, Alabama where the author grew up and later attended Auburn University in Auburn, Alabama. William served in the Unites States Army before moving to Texas and completing his Bachelor Degree at the University of North Texas in Denton, Texas. The author went on to attend Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas completing a Master of Divinity Degree. William has served in a number of churches as a teacher, lay leader, and staff member. This book fulfills his long held desire and passion for writing. In the future, the author envisions continuing his ministry in both writing and church ministry. God teaches and speaks to people through the Bible. This book will teach and inspire Christians to read the Bible and respond with their lives. In Reading Through Matthew, Encountering God, I demonstrate my method of Bible reading, journaling, and prayer. This Dynamic Bible Reading, as I call it, involves reading a small Bible passage and journaling the believer's interaction with that passage through three distinct sections; (1) Scripture Insight: the meaning of the passage, (2) Application: how to apply the meaning to life, and (3) Prayer: seeking God's guidance in living out what the passage teaches. To best draw the meaning of Scripture into our lives, we must read it, work through its meaning, and begin to practice it in life. This book helps to develop these skills. Once gained, I hope each reader will pass this book on to someone else who might benefit from it.

This survey textbook by two respected New Testament scholars is designed to meet the needs of contemporary evangelical undergraduates. The book effectively covers the New Testament books and major topics in the New Testament, assuming no prior academic study of the Bible. The authors pay attention to how the New Testament documents fit together as a canonical whole that supplements the Old Testament to make up the Christian Scriptures. They also show how the New Testament writings provide basic material for Christian doctrine, spirituality, and engagement with culture. Chapters can be assigned in any order, making this an ideal textbook for one-semester courses at evangelical schools. This is the first volume in a new series of survey textbooks that will cover the Old and New Testaments. The book features full-color illustrations that hold interest and aid learning and offers a full array of pedagogical aids: photographs, sidebars, maps, time lines, charts, glossary, and discussion questions. Additional resources for instructors and students are available through Textbook eSources.
