This now classic book is a significant corrective to several recent developments in the study of the historical Jesus. In contrast to depictions of Jesus as a wandering Cynic teacher, Geza Vermes offers a portrait based on evidence of charismatic activity in first-century Galilee. Vermes shows how the major New Testament titles of Jesus-prophet, Lord, Messiah, son of man, Son of God-can be understood in this historical context. The result is a description of Jesus that retains its power and its credibility.

He was born in the spring or early summer of the year 4 or 6 BCE, probably in "the little town of Bethlehem" in the Galilee, near Nazareth. He became a laborer, maybe a stonemason. His mother, Mary, could not get him married because of his suspect paternity, but he had a girlfriend, Mary of Magdala. He had several brothers, one of them a twin brother, Judas "the Twin" (Thomas), and two sisters. He was charged by the Romans with sedition. At a preliminary hearing, when queried by the High Priest whether or not he, the laborer in rags, was "the anointed son of the Blessed One," as all kings were, he answered, "Am I?" He was crucified like two thousand other Jews during the Roman occupation of Palestine. He died between 30 and 32 CE. His followers revered him as a prophet, but he was a marginal Jew who went about doing good. Little more than one hundred years later, Tertullian, the African apologist, would write, "I am saved if I be not ashamed of him."

This book completes a remarkable trilogy... The basic premise on which the project is founded is that a careful and impartial reconstruction of Jesus' Jewish background is an essential preliminary to any reconstruction of Jesus himself.

The ramifications of the crucifixion of Jesus by Jews are still felt deeply today. Discussion of Judaism and Christianity, Israelis and Palestinians, and the Jewish heritage of Jesus evoke high-level emotional responses from Christians and non-Christians. Discussion becomes heated argument as factions divide and take sides.Centuries-old feelings of fear, anger, hostility, resentment, repression, and blame fan the flames of unrest and disagreement. Jesus the Jew speaks to these issues. Markus Barth addresses Jews and Christians, in fact, everyone who is looking for a new or deepened understanding of Israel and of the church, especially in respect to servicing truth, justice, freedom, and peace. Barth considers two major areas of conflict--What Does It Mean That Jesus Is a Jew? and Israel and the Palestinians. He explores biblical testimony, the uniqueness of Jesus, and Christian responsibility. He deals with the protests and arguments of Arab scholars, biblical scholars, and modern journalists. Jesus and the Jew offers an insightful look at tradition, history, and the Scriptures to provide a perspective through which Christians, Jews, Arabs, and Moslems may learn to accept each other.

Why Saying Jesus Is A Jew Hurts Jews written by Nicholas Irish and has been published by The Hermit Kingdom Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2005 with Religion categories.

Does saying that Jesus Christ is a Jew hurt Jews and Jewish communities? This is the question that Nicholas Irish asks. Nicholas Irish's answer? YES! Irish provides ample evidence from history, society, politics, religion, and sociology to show that saying that Jesus Christ is a Jew hurts Jews and Jewish communities. Irish argues that stating that Jesus Christ is a Jew will push historical processes such as the violent pogroms that Jews experienced in Russia and the Holocaust that Jews experienced in Europe. This book is a must read for Jews and non-Jews alike. It is insightful and very readable. Even a person without any previous knowledge of Jewish history or Christianity can understand this book after reading it. This book may well hold the key to Jewish survival for the 21st Century!

Jesus the Jew, Christ the King unites biblical scholarship with established theology. Oftentimes, scholars distinguish between the historical Jesus and the Christ of faith, suggesting that Christian belief has elevated Jesus of Nazareth from the common life of an itinerant Jewish rabbi to a divine figure akin to the heroes of Greco-Roman culture. James Mikolajczyk evaluates both the historical Jesus and the Christ of faith separately before uniting the concepts for academics and believers alike. The definition of Israel connects to this harmony, although many theologians apply it exclusively to the church or to the Jewish people. In keeping with Christian tradition, Mikolajczyk affirms Jesus as the only begotten Son of God and, moreover, the fulfillment of scriptural Israel.

"'A painstakingly researched, meticulously documented, cogently reasoned and eminently readable book. It represents an important step forward in New Testament study which henceforward scholars, even if they do not agree with it will not be able to ignore.' Times Literary Supplement 'For those who are concerned to penetrate to the historical realities within the gospel records this is an extremely important book.' Expository Times 'Can only be described as epoch-making.' Jewish Chronicle" In this, Geza Vermes' best known book, there emerges perhaps the closest portrayal that we have of a genuinely historical Jesus. Freed from the weight and onus of Christian doctrine or Jewish animus, Jesus here appears as a vividly human, yet profoundly misunderstood, figure, thoroughly grounded and contextualised within the extraordinary intellectual and cultural cross currents of his day. Jesus the Jew is a remarkable portrait by a brilliant scholar writing at the height of his powers, informed by insights from the New Testament, Jewish literature, and the Dead Sea Scrolls alike.
