Jesus: Then, Now, Ever. This book fails. How could it not? The author is human; the subject beyond human ken. Still, the challenge compels. Tell the tales, teller, the many tales that still for all can teach. Jesus as a child; his mother guiding his early inquisitive steps then, as a dutiful son, miracles reluctantly began. Jesus, years, miles, and lives removed, hitchhiking rides from farmers, visiting querulous college students unclear yet whom to trust, commiserating with a mother-who-wasn't-but-still-believes-she-is, Jesus being challenged and mocked on worldwide TV by Satan himself. Satan telling how he trained a deer to fire a rifle that when he came upon the Christian Hunters in the woods one day""he knew how to shoot them before they got him. Jesus thrown out of a church for not dressing right, bringing together a wounded GI and the enemy soldier who had just tried to kill him, attending a world-changing church conference without recognition, working and proselytizing in an American car wash, joining rescuers in the throes of great natural disaster near where he had preached and saved souls centuries before. Jesus visiting John on the isle of Patmos to discuss the heresies of TV in centuries to be, rehabbing an artist who through all his agonies never ceased believing in God, noting one sentence that spoken by man or woman is never true, teaching us all how not to pray, offering a college religion class the right to ask him any one question and he would honestly answer. And they did and he did and we learn it all. So many lessons to teach and lives to mold. The mission of God's Son never seeming to end. Certainly not to be captured in a human-wrought book.

Radical Jesus written by John Vincent and has been published by Red Church Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-05-08 with Religion categories.

"Radical Jesus," by Dr. John Vincent, is a straightforward, dramatic, revelatory retelling of the story of Jesus in Mark's Gospel. Jesus appears exactly as he appeared to his own contemporaries, and to his first followers, as an exceptional, highly original, champion of the values of the poor, developing an alternative faith lifestyle at the bottom of society, and forming a community of followers whom he taught to act with his own freedom and commitment, which he called Kingdom of God. "Radical Jesus" argues that Jesus still today represents a significant and potentially world-changing style and method, whereby real change can be pioneered by groups of committed entrepreneurial disciples, following Jesus's Way. Our twenty-first century contexts of social, cultural, and political choices evoke Jesus as Alternative, Guru, Master, Blasphemer, Politician, and Journey Downward.

Jesus Now And Then written by Richard A. Burridge and has been published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2004 with Religion categories.

"Jesus Now and Then" engagingly traces the changing images of Jesus in scholarship and popular culture from the time of the early church to the present day. Who did Jesus think he was? Did the early church take a man and make him into God? Was Christianity actually invented by Paul? How has Jesus been treated in the centuries since? What contemporary views are compatible with a traditional understanding of Scripture? Richard Burridge and Graham Gould leave no stone unturned in detailing Jesusb life and legacy. They start with the evidence about Jesus found in the New Testament and then go on to explore the early-church debates as a way of tackling contemporary issues. They also discuss how the figure of Jesus has been portrayed through history, how his teachings have been understood, and how he has come to be worshiped by Christians around the world. This essential historical information sets current questions and controversies about Jesus into context and helps to explain the many different views and interpretations of him now on offer.

Jesus Then And Jesus Now written by Gregory C. Jenks and has been published by Wipf and Stock this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-05-12 with Religion categories.

This book is written from an intentionally progressive Christian perspective. It draws together multiple strands from the author's personal and professional life: critical biblical scholarship, field archaeology, parish ministry, seminary teaching, and personal religious practice. In this book you will find a profile of what Jesus may have been like within the context of Second Temple Judaism. This is set alongside selected aspects of the Jesus tradition as preserved in the earliest Christian writings. Neither is ascribed primacy over the other, but each casts light on the other and both inform the final part of the book that traces some of the ways in which Jesus communities now might shape their collective and individual lives. The book begins with recent research into the diverse expressions of Jewish identity and practice in the early Roman period. These chapters focus on three key issues: the villages of Galilee as the primary setting for the activity of Jesus, the politics of the Herodian succession, and the significance of continued Jewish religious aspirations for divine intervention. This is followed by a careful consideration of the Jesus tradition in the Gospels. Four issues are considered in turn: Jesus and the kingdom of God; Jesus and the afterlife; friends and opponents of Jesus; and his death by public execution on a cross. The interplay of these four themes, together with the contextual dynamics of the previous section, generates a composite image that blends the various glimpses of Jesus into a more realistic impression. The third section explores some of the more controversial aspects of Christianity in the contemporary world. How do we celebrate the humanity of Jesus alongside the traditional focus on the divinity of Jesus, this book celebrates the humanity of Jesus. What is the significance of resurrection in a culture where individual survival beyond physical death is becoming increasingly meaningless? What challenges and opportunities do the multi-faith realities of our human community offer for the future of the spiritual tradition that Jesus began? The book finishes with some reflections on the individual and public implications of Christian discipleship today. This is not a template for a 'new Reformation', but a modest statement of how at least one progressive Christian seeks to fashion a life that is 'holy' and 'true'. Gregory Jenks is an Anglican priest and biblical scholar. He is Academic Dean at St Francis Theological College, Brisbane and Senior Lecturer in the School of Theology, Charles Sturt University. A long-time Fellow of the Jesus Seminar, and a former Associate Director of the Westar Institute, Dr Jenks is also director of the Jesus Database project and a co-director of the Bethsaida Archaeology Project in Israel. His recent books include The Once and Future Bible: An Introduction to the Bible for Religious Progressives (2011), and Wisdom and Imagination: Religious Progressives and the Search for Meaning (co-edited with Rex Hunt, 2014)
