Azimuthal correlations of charged hadrons with direct-photon ([gamma]dir) and neutral-pion ([pi]0) trigger particles are analyzed in central Au+Au and minimum-bias p+p collisions at $\sqrt{s}$$_{NN}$ =200 GeV in the STAR experiment. The charged-hadron per-trigger yields at mid-rapidity from central Au+Au collisions are compared with p+p collisions to quantify the suppression in Au+Au collisions. The suppression of the away-side associated-particle yields per [gamma]dir trigger is independent of the transverse momentum of the trigger particle (P$trig\atop{T}$, whereas the suppression is smaller at low transverse momentum of the associated charged hadrons (P$assoc\atop{T}$). Within uncertainty, similar levels of suppression are observed for [gamma]dir and [pi]0 triggers as a function of zT ($\equiv$ P$assoc\atop{T}$$/$P$trig\atop{T}$). The results are compared with energy-loss-inspired theoretical model predictions. In conclusion, our studies support previous conclusions that the lost energy reappears predominantly at low transverse momentum, regardless of the trigger energy.

Dihadron correlations are analyzed in √sNN = 200 GeV d+Au collisions classified by forward charged particle multiplicity and zero-degree neutral energy in the Au-beam direction. It is found that the jetlike correlated yield increases with the event multiplicity. After taking into account this dependence, the non-jet contribution on the away side is minimal, leaving little room for a back-to-back ridge in these collisions.

This work has studied the particle composition of jets by determining the ratios p±/p± and K±/p± in Au + Au and d + Au collisions at vsNN = 200 GeV measured by the STAR experiment at RHIC. Jets were found by measuring the angular azimuthal correlation between particles at high transverse momentum. Jets were then identified by their back-to-back correlation. A technique was developed to identify charged particles using their specific ionisation measured in the STAR Time Projection Chamber (TPC). This thesis contains one of the first implementations of using direct photons to tag jets in heavy ion collisions. An attempt was made to extract a trigger sample rich in direct photons from neutral triggers. The hadron ratios were calculated from the jet yields as a function of transverse momentum in each collision system. Although the away side yield is suppressed in central Au + Au, there is no evidence that the relative particle yields are changed. The hadron ratios for the three systems were found to be consistent with simulated p + p events generated using the Pythia Monte Carlo event generator. This reinforces the conclusion that the fragmentation process is unchanged by interactions with the medium.
