For whisky professionals, connoisseurs and lovers, Jim McEwan is an icon like Steve Jobs, Paul McCartney and Pelé. Growing up in the small village of Bowmore on the "whisky island" of Islay, he started his career in 1963 at the age of 15 as a cask maker in the Bowmore distillery. This developed into an unprecedented career in which Jim was to shape and revolutionise the world of whisky like no other. The worldwide success of single malt whisky is inextricably linked to him. The highlight of his work was the revival of the Bruichladdich distillery, today one of the most innovative and respected representatives of the whisky world. How a journey began with two men and a dog that would lead to new universes of whisky is only part of the story that Jim McEwan tells here anecdotally and with much humour. Lavishly designed, lavishly illustrated and sumptuously appointed - a delight for lovers of wonderful books and wonderful drinks alike.

The book of James is a book about wisdom, offering readers practical advice about living a life that glorifies God. Pursue godly wisdom and be inspired to live wholly for Jesus by embarking on a journey through the book of James. War is uncomfortable for Christians, and worldwide war is unfamiliar for today’s generations. Jim Downing reflects on his illustrious military career, including his experience during the bombing of Pearl Harbor, to show how we can be people of faith during troubled times. The natural human impulse is to run from attack. Jim Downing—along with countless other soldiers and sailors at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941—ran toward it, fighting to rescue his fellow navy men, to protect loved ones and civilians on the island, and to find the redemptive path forward from a devastating war. We are protected from war these days, but there was a time when war was very present in our lives, and in The Other Side of Infamy we learn from a veteran of Pearl Harbor and World War II what it means to follow Jesus into and through every danger, toil, and snare.

In this book I have attempted to collect together some of the adventures, experiences and incidents that have taken place during over fifty years of travelling with my husband Jim. We often spent time swapping tales around campfires or at happy hours and some of the other campers would comment that it would seem that we had a lot more tales to tell. The suggestion that some of these stories should be put into print for other people to enjoy seemed like a good idea at the time. Deciding how to record a selection of events that had occurred on our many journeys together was a difficult task. This book is not an alphabetical list of places to visit nor is it a list of suggested itineraries; other excellent guidebooks filled with all that kind of information are available. Rather I have chosen to group the stories under alphabetical headings, only then did I find that deciding which story should go where would be difficult. My wish is that the reader can travel along as I recall our journeys or can choose to dip into a chapter that is of interest. Hopefully I have not offended any of the people who may recognise themselves in some of the tales and that they will remember our meetings, however brief, with fondness.

This book is a complete study through the book of James, with space for users to answer questions or take notes. Study as a group or individually. In this book, you can chart your growth in Gods Word, break the strongholds that torment your life, and understand who you are in Christ. You have all to gain, comprehension that surpasses anything you can imagine in the natural humanity of life. This study gave me tools to fight the devil the enemy of my soul. As of this writing Im four years old in the Lord. This was a timely growth journey/study for me. Transcribed by a true Bondservant! Helping others, the young & the young-at-heart, to strive to be their best. It is a helpful and fun study with clarity. It leaves the traveler, student/reader- with the desire to become a Bondservant to our Almighty God. Helen Siefert, friend This journey or study of James has guided me into a new life of not being explosive when situations are not to my favor. I credit it to the opportunity of spending time studying the Word of God in a small group setting. Learning new nuggets or keys to help me every day. I am over joyed at having this support that I might become a mature and loving Christian early in my life! Justin Powlison, grandson The Journey with James has been a life changing experience, or it was for me! I learned about Gods forgiveness, plus how to forgive others with His help! I would recommend others read and work it for themselves for a number of reasons. The main one being on how to be an outstanding Christian, or like James says, Bondservant for Jesus. Kendra Powlison, granddaughter

Journey On The James written by Earl Swift and has been published by University of Virginia Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-12-19 with History categories.

From its beginnings as a trickle of icy water in Virginia's northwest corner to its miles-wide mouth at Hampton Roads, the James River has witnessed more recorded history than any other feature of the American landscape -- as home to the continent's first successful English settlement, highway for Native Americans and early colonists, battleground in the Revolution and the Civil War, and birthplace of America's twentieth-century navy. In 1998, restless in his job as a reporter for the Norfolk Virginian-Pilot, Earl Swift landed an assignment traveling the entire length of the James. He hadn't been in a canoe since his days as a Boy Scout, and he knew that the river boasts whitewater, not to mention man-made obstacles, to challenge even experienced paddlers. But reinforced by Pilot photographer Ian Martin and a lot of freeze-dried food and beer, Swift set out to immerse himself -- he hoped not literally -- in the river and its history. What Swift survived to bring us is this engrossing chronicle of three weeks in a fourteen-foot plastic canoe and four hundred years in the life of Virginia. Fueled by humor and a dauntless curiosity about the land, buildings, and people on the banks, and anchored by his sidekick Martin -- whose photographs accompany the text -- Swift points his bow through the ghosts of a frontier past, past Confederate forts and POW camps, antebellum mills, ruined canals, vanished towns, and effluent-spewing industry. Along the banks, lonely meadowlands alternate with suburbs and power plants, marinas and the gleaming skyscrapers of Richmond's New South downtown. Enduring dunkings, wolf spiders, near-arrest, channel fever, and twenty-knot winds, Swift makes it to the Chesapeake Bay. Readers who accompany him through his Journey on the James will come away with the accumulated pleasure, if not the bruises and mud, of four hundred miles of adventure and history in the life of one of America's great watersheds.

“In this post-pandemic world, reliance upon our Catholic traditions provides both comfort and challenge in daily living. Father Bacik is skilled at presenting the richness of our faith perspective in a manner that is accessible to all…. Each chapter distills the essence of Catholic belief, a refreshing return to the heart of our faith.” —from the foreword Through the lens of “spirituality,” and more specifically the idea of “spiritual journey,” the Nicene Creed, the theological and moral virtues, the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit, the Beatitudes, major liturgical feasts, and holy people, The Catholic Spiritual Journey explores how the Catholic spiritual tradition offers hope in challenging times. “Fr. Bacik fuses a classical and contemporary pathway toward spiritual enlightenment. This catechetical masterpiece offers a rich meditation for anyone looking for a fresh interpretation of Catholic Christian teachings.” —Rev. Richard S. Vosko, Hon. AIA, author of Art and Architecture for Congregational Worship: A Search for a Common Ground
