L’extensa bibliografia dedicada a Joan Fuster inclou estudis sobre els seus papers polítics, sobre els seus textos d’història social, sobre els seus escrits de literatura, sobre el seu estil tan característic, sobre els seus aforismes, sobre la seua poesia, etc. Tanmateix, per a cercar algun treball en què es pose la lupa, des d’un punt de vista estrictament literari, sobre un corpus determinat d’articles del suecà, hauríem d’acudir a introduccions de reculls o antologies, a apunts dispersos o, fins i tot, a alguna nota a peu de pàgina. Amb la intenció de cobrir, si més no, una porció d’aquest nínxol, s’aborda l’anàlisi literària del corpus conformat pels cent trenta articles que Fuster va publicar en les dues seccions mensuals que mantingué amb regularitat en la revista ‘Serra d’Or’: “Restriccions mentals” (1968-1973), primer i, posteriorment, “Passar el dia, empènyer l’any” (1978-1984).

Joan Fuster fou un cas modèlic d’autor vocacional, que va saber convertir en professió una necessitat personal de comunicar-se mitjançant l’escriptura col·laborant habitualment en la premsa escrita. El resultat de la seua intensa dedicació foren milers d’articles apareguts en periòdics i revistes de periodicitat setmanal, mensual o anual, una tasca que no sols va ser la seua professió, sobretot entre els anys cinquanta i setanta, sinó que havia de ser i és un aspecte definitori de la seua manera d’escriure, de la seua escriptura. Més de quatre mil col·laboracions foren publicades en mitjans com ‘Jornada’, ‘Levante’, ‘El Correo Catalán’, ‘La Vanguardia’, ‘Avui’, ‘El País’, ‘Diario de Valencia’, ‘Informaciones’, ‘Serra d’Or’, ‘Destino’, ‘Jano’, ‘El Temps’, ‘Por Favor’, ‘Tele/eXprés’, ‘La Nostra Revista’ o ‘Pont Blau’, entre altres. Aquest volum inclou cinc estudis d’especialistes (Josep Lluís Gómez Mompart, Joan Manuel Tresserras, Empar Marco Estellés, Francesc Pérez i Moragón i J. Àngel Cano Mateu) que presenten visions detallades sobre parcel·les ben significatives del periodisme i el pensament fusterià. El conjunt aprofundeix en aquest aspecte de la seua producció, poc analitzat per la bibliografia existent fins ara.

This volume helps us to understand that the current political disorders in Catalonia have deep cultural roots. It focuses on the rise of Catalan cultural, national and linguistic identity in the 20th century. What is happening in Catalonia? What lies behind its political conflicts? Catalan identity has been evolving for centuries, starting in early medieval ages (11th and 12lve centuries). It is not a modern phenomenon. The emergence of imperial Spain in the 16 c. and the French Ancien Régime in the 17 c. correlates with a decline of Catalan culture, which was politically absorbed by the Spanish state after the conquest of Barcelona in 1714. However, Catalan language and culture flourished again under the stimulus of the European Romantic Nationalism movement (known as the Renaixença in Catalonia). During the first Dictatorship (Primo de Rivera, 1923-1930), the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939), and the long Francoist era (1939-1975), Catalan language and culture were repressed, yet refurbished and reconstructed at the same time. This rise of a plural, complex, and non-homogeneous Catalan identity constitutes the subject matter of this volume. National conflicts that emerged later in the Spanish democratic state leant heavily on the life engagement and vital commitment experienced by the entrenched intellectual movements of the twentieth century in Catalonia, Valencian Country and the Balearic Islands. This book reveals the cultural and literary grassroots of these conflicts.
