Josep Pijoan (Barcelona, 1881 - Lausana, 1963) va ser una de les veus més lúcides i fines d’aquell extraordinari moviment de regeneració espiritual que va viure Catalunya a començaments del segle passat. Va estudiar Filosofia i Lletres i Arquitectura, i va col·laborar a diverses revistes amb articles sobre història de l’art i estètica. Va ser també un dels col·laboradors més actius i eficaços de Prat de la Riba i un dels fundadors de l’Institut d’Estudis Catalans. Va abandonar Barcelona el 1913 en circumstàncies poc amables, i va començar un «exili voluntari» al Canadà. Va ser professor, entre d’altres, a la Universitat de Toronto, al Pomona College de Claremont, a Califòrnia, i a Chicago, així com assesor de la Societat de Nacions. Les seves Historia del Arte en tres volums (1914-1916) i Summa Artis (en col·laboració amb B._J. Cossío, 1927), així com una Historia del Mundo (1926-1941) o un Breviario de Historia del Mundo y de la Humanidad (1948) són encara avui obres de referència. Pijoan rememora, en aquestes pàgines lúcides i emocionades (publicades per primer cop el 1915), l’amic mort, en un retrat d’extraordinària qualitat intel·lectual i humana.
