He was a master of light. Joaquín Sorolla loved his wife and his family. He painted them all the time. He lived in the time when photography was being invented and commercialized. Sorolla created a virtual family album with his wonderful paintings. He invited us to see and share his happiness. Sorolla was not shy about his family as many of his contemporaries were. He sold many paintings that showed his family, especially his daughter María was a favorite with the public, and Sorolla jokingly called María the breadwinner of the family. He wanted us to share his view of the ideal family as he shared his view of a great and united Spain. Sorolla painted dogs and a cat as pets, as part of the family, superbly catching their soul and character.

During our research in the Spanish painter Joaquín Sorolla (born in Valencia 1863 - died in Cercedilla 1923) we came across a wonderful painting of his wife with a cat and a dog, Clotilde y gato y perro, from 1910. As animal lovers the idea arose to see, how cats were portrayed in painting around the period of Sorolla. Earlier painters had struggled with getting the proportions right, especially the faces but there was a huge development of talent in Europe in the 19th century.This volume is organized by painter's year of birth, in a few cases by year of painting. Another volume organizes the material alphabetically by painter's name. What is most convenient may depend on the intended use.It proved to be a very rewarding tour of both Europe and Asia. Cats is a great subject and it is impossible to cover Cats in Art in just one short volume. It would make a great exhibition!Nevertheless, we hope that you will enjoy the selection and the masterful skills and talent of these great artists!

The first fireboats from the late 18th century were tugboats, fitted with firefighting equipment. Modern fireboats are capable of pumping sometimes tens of thousands of gallons of water per minute and are very fast. Fireboats are used for fighting fires on docks and shore side warehouses or even wildfires as they can directly attack fires when close by. Fureboats also have an effectively unlimited supply of water available, pumping directly from below the hull. Fireboats are most usually seen by the public when welcoming a fleet or historical ships with a display of their water moving capabilities, throwing large arcs of water in every direction.
