1.1 PREFACE : An organization, whether a business or an Industrial enterprise needs money, material, machinery and men for its survival and growth. The success or failure of an organization depends upon the effective combination of these factors. However, the management of ‘men’ means the employees of the organization. Their contribution towards organizational goal is well known to all, since pre-historic time to the most recent time. Whenever we talk about effectiveness and efficiency of an organization, we have to take a serious cognizance of employees as a major determining factor. Organizational effectiveness is critically dependant on how it attracts, recruits motivates and retains its work force. Today’s organizations need to be more flexible so that they are equipped to develop their workforce and enjoy their commitment. If we want an employee’s maximum contribution to work, he/she should be provided such a work environment where he/she will have a strong desire to work. The satisfied, happy and hard working employee is the biggest asset of any organization. The work force of any organization is responsible to a large extent for its productivity and profitability. The work environment has important bearing on the efficiency and satisfaction of the employees. A safe work environment provides the basis for a person to enjoy working. The work should not pose a health hazard for the person. Work performance is constantly affected by physical and psychological conditions of work. It is now increasingly realized that many work behavioural problems associated with performance, moral, absenteeism etc. can be solved with increasing awareness of improving the total work environment.

Quality of work life, job satisfaction, and life satisfaction are interrelated aspects that profoundly influence an individual's overall well-being. The quality of work life pertains to the overall conditions, environment, and experiences a person encounters in their workplace. A positive quality of work life is characterized by factors such as a supportive and inclusive work culture, opportunities for growth and development, work-life balance, and fair compensation. When employees find themselves in such a nurturing work environment, they are more likely to experience job satisfaction, which is a measure of contentment and fulfillment derived from their work. Job satisfaction is a complex construct influenced by various factors, including the nature of the job itself, the relationships with colleagues and supervisors, the degree of autonomy, and the alignment of personal values with the organization's mission. When individuals are content in their jobs, they tend to be more engaged, productive, and committed, contributing to organizational success. Furthermore, job satisfaction can have a direct impact on the quality of work life, as it can result in reduced stress levels, improved mental and emotional well-being, and a greater sense of purpose. Importantly, job satisfaction is not an isolated element but is closely tied to life satisfaction, which encompasses a person's overall well-being and happiness in life. Individuals who are satisfied with their jobs tend to experience higher levels of life satisfaction, as work often constitutes a significant part of one's daily routine and identity. A fulfilling job can provide financial security, opportunities for personal growth, and a sense of accomplishment, all of which contribute to a more satisfying life. Moreover, job satisfaction can positively spill over into one's personal life, fostering better relationships and overall life contentment. Conversely, when the quality of work life is poor, characterized by a lack of recognition, excessive workload, conflicts, and a lack of work-life balance, it can lead to decreased job satisfaction and, subsequently, reduced life satisfaction. In such cases, individuals may experience stress, burnout, and dissatisfaction in both their professional and personal lives. This highlights the intricate web of connections between these three elements, where the impact of one spills over into the others, creating a cascading effect.

This study examined the interrelationships among life satisfaction, job satisfaction, and happiness and the selected demographic variables of income, age, marital status, education, sex, job tenure, job title, type of school, and location of employment. Survey data were collected from 1,993 elementary, high school, and community college teachers in the southern Ontario area, representing ten public school boards, three Roman Catholic school boards and three community colleges. Several theories were utilized in developing thirteen hypotheses and eleven experimental hypotheses. A thorough review of the literature (to January, 1980) was undertaken and major conclusions noted. Hoppock's (1935) Job Satisfaction Measure, Gurin, Veroff, and Feld's (1960) Happiness Scale, and Converse and Robinson's (1965) Life Satisfaction Scale were used as the instrument. Chi-square analysis was employed as the statistical method. Indicative of the findings: the level of education taught was significantly related to all three organizational variables, sex was unrelated to life satisfaction though positively related to job satisfaction, and income was found not to be related to either happiness or life satisfaction. A minority of findings were contrary to hypothesized relationships. Specifically, age was found to be unrelated to any of the three organizational variables, and educational achievement was not significantly related to happiness. A model was developed to illustrate the interrelationships of the organizational and demographic variables. This model was designed specifically to reflect teacher attitudes, though it may have reasonable application for other relatively homogeneous groups of employees such as nurses, engineers, or social workers.

The second edition will be an update and further elaboration of the literature related to subjective well-being, happiness, and life satisfaction. It will have a new substantial section that focuses on reviewing much of the literature of subjective well-being within specific life domains (social life, material life, leisure life, work life, community life, spiritual life, family life, health life, sex life, travel life, etc.) In the 1st edition the research in these various life domains was discussed only briefly. The second edition will maintain the same organizational structure of the first edition; that is, Part 1 will focus on introduction (definitions and distinctions; examples of measures of subjective well-being, happiness, and life satisfaction; and motives underlying subjective well-being). Part 2 will focus on psychological strategies that are allow people to optimize subjective well-being by engaging in psychological processes related to the relationship between and among life domains (e.g., social life, family life, love life, spiritual life, community life, financial life, etc.) This part will contain four chapters related to these various “inter-domain” processes: bottom-up spillover, top-down spillover, horizontal spillover, and compensation. Part 3 of the book will focus on “intra-domain” psychological strategies designed to optimize subjective well-being. These include re-evaluation based on personal history, re-evaluation based on self-concept, re-evaluation based on social comparison, goal selection, goal implementation and attainment, and re-appraisal. Part 4 of the book will focus on balance processes—how people attempt to create balance in their lives using psychological processes within specific life domains (intra-domain strategies) and processes that relate one domain to another (inter-domain strategies).

Moderated regression analyses were used to assess the degree to which indirect indicators of job importance moderate the relationship between job satisfaction and life satisfaction. The 1971 Quality of American Life Survey and the 1972-1973 Quality of Employment Survey provided two large (N = 2164 and N = 1496) nationwide probability sample data sets for these secondary analyses. It was hypothesized that the strength of the job satisfaction-life satisfaction relationship is positively related to job importance. Contrary ot this hypothesis, respondents for whom their job was expected to be more important did not have substantially stronger job satisfaction-life satisfaction relationships than respondents for whom their job was expected to be less important. The zero-order job satisfaction-life satisfaction correlations in both samples were stronger than expected (r = .48 and r = .49). Discussion focused on the conceptual implications of the failure to find substantial moderator effects. Locke's (1969) theory of the implicit role of importance in determining satisfaction was invoked to explain the obtained pattern of results.

Job satisfaction is a central concept in work and organizational psychology as it is associated with important individual as well as organizational outcomes. Work is the number one activity that occupies most of adults' waking time. Being satisfied with one's job, which is defined as a pleasurable or positive emotional state resulting from the appraisal of one's job or job experience, is related to important work-related and health-related outcomes (e.g., higher job performance, organizational commitment, organizational citizenship behavior, life satisfaction, lower absenteeism and lower counterproductive work behavior). This book discusses determinants of job satisfaction as well as workplace implications and the impact job satisfaction has on the psychological well-being of individuals.
