A workless household is defined as a household that includes at least one person of working-age (men aged 16-64 years and women aged 16-59 years) where no one in the household aged 16 or over is in employment. Currently, there are about three million households, containing 1.7 million children, who still have no-one in work. Evidence suggests that many adults in workless households would like to work, but that they face multiple barriers to work, such as low skills, disability, a lack of affordable and flexible childcare, or caring responsibilities and may have been on benefits for a long time. The NAO report examines the effectiveness of Department for Work and Pensions' employment programmes aimed at workless households in England, focusing on two programmes: the New Deal for Lone Parents and the New Deal for Partners. The report finds that these programmes are making a difference for those who take part, but more needs to be done to reach out to workless households and to increase awareness of the support available and help people to prepare for and find work.

Sure Start Children S Centres written by Great Britain: National Audit Office and has been published by The Stationery Office this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2006-12-19 with Education categories.

The Government launched the Sure Start programme in 1998 to help give the best start in life for every child, particularly from disadvantaged backgrounds, by bringing together early education, childcare, health and family support services. From April 2006, local authorities have been responsible for managing the programme for their area and decide whether to do so directly or to contract out management to a private or voluntary provider, whilst the DfES issues guidance to local authorities and monitors performance. The first 800 centres were located in the most deprived areas, but the Government has pledged to create a children's centre for every community by 2010, around 3,500 in all, committing £3.2 billion of funds until 2008. Children's centres also have income from various other sources including grants and fees for childcare charged to parents. This NAO report focuses on the capacity of the centres set up by September 2005 and the performance of responsible local authorities in delivering value for money through sound financial management, in reaching the most disadvantaged families, and in monitoring their performance effectively. It finds that good progress is being made although the full effectiveness of the centres will be measurable only in the long term. The centres are valued by most of the families who use them, although the early signs are that more still needs to be done to reach and support some of the most excluded groups. The costs of centres and activities vary widely, and local authorities and centres that the NAO visited need to understand their costs better and assess whether they were using their funds cost-effectively.

This strategy document sets out the measures the Department for Work and Pensions intends to take to help achieve the Government's target to eradicate child poverty by 2020, based on the principle that improving employment opportunities for parents is the most sustainable route out of poverty for themselves and their children. These measures follow on from the 2007 Budget statement (HCP 342, session 2006-07; ISBN 9780102944556) and form part of the Government's cross-departmental strategy to tackle child poverty through a whole range of policy areas, including tax and benefits, health and housing, childcare and education. Measures announced include: i) extending the New Deal Plus for Lone Parents (NDLP Plus) to March 2011 and to cover all lone parents in London, and to extend key elements of this support programme to two-parent families on benefit in the current pilot areas and throughout London; ii) extending the In-Work Credit for Lone Parents scheme (which provides an extra £40 per week for lone parents moving into work in 40 per cent of the country, including most of London) until June 2008 and to increase the rate payable in London to £60; iii) pilot schemes to link the In-Work Credit to adviser support to promote retention in work for lone parents, based on the Employment Retention and Advancement model; and iv) a major expansion of work-focused English as a Second Language provision, delivered through the cities strategy pilots in East and West London.

Multi Agency Working In The Early Years written by Michael Gasper and has been published by SAGE this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-01-20 with Education categories.

Getting multi-agency working right is an exciting but challenging goal in early years care and education; this book suggests ways to draw together the different professional ideas, methods, and targets. Enhancing the delivery of services to children, parents, and communities is essential if we are to address the detrimental effects of poverty and exclusion. Looking at the Birth to 8 age range, and drawing on interviews with Children’s Centre leaders, the book considers the benefits, and complexities, of multi-agency working; what enables, and impedes, good practice; examples of successful multi-agency working; leadership and management in multi-agency settings; and what the ‘new professionals’ look like.

Ofsted today publishes the Annual Report 2010/11, drawing on over 31,000 inspection visits across the schools, early years, children's social care and learning and skills sectors in England. Launched by Her Majesty's Chief Inspector Miriam Rosen, this in-depth analysis provides an insight into the quality of those services for children and learners, what is working well and what needs to improve. The report highlights how an inadequate inspection judgement, whether for a children's home or a school, a college or a nursery, can be an important catalyst for change. For example, the total number of schools in a category of concern - that is judged to be in special measures or being given a notice to improve - reduced from 553 at the end of last year to 451 at the end of August 2011. Over a fifth of schools judged inadequate at their previous inspection were found to be good or better when inspected again this year. In addition, schools are now emerging from special measures faster than the previous year - after an average of 18 months rather than 20. In inspections of local authorities'; children's social care, where Ofsted completed the second full year of unannounced inspection of contact, referral and assessment arrangements, weaknesses identified the previous year had been addressed in the great majority of cases.
