Companionship and strategies for job seekers Millions of people become unemployed every year, yet when job loss happens to us, we typically feel completely alone and often lost, ashamed, and afraid. No one knows how to comfort us when we lose our job. Unlike other griefs--when someone can say, "I'm sorry for your loss"--joblessness leaves family, friends, and acquaintances awkwardly searching for words. Jobs Lost, Faith Found is for those who feel alone due to job loss. It is also for those who offer respect, companionship, guidance, and resources to the unemployed. Mary C. Lindberg, pastor, chaplain, and spiritual director, draws on her family's experience of unemployment and the wisdom of many others, including sages from Scripture and the Christian tradition, to help readers discover a sense of worth and purpose on their way to a new job. She offers prayers, insights, Bible stories, and reflections to light the way during this time of uncertainty and wandering. The path toward hope will be your own, but the ideas, reflections, and strategies in this book will get you started on your journey.

Because we all know someone who needs help looking ...and believing it will happen. Her husband was growing increasingly discouraged because he didn't feel as though his job search was really going anywhere. An intelligent, competent, accomplished professional, but he didn't really know how to look for a job...in today's job market! (Chapter 8 - Get Understanding...Get Organized) Maybe you just finished school and ready or not, you have to find your first career position. Or perhaps after serving your company for almost twenty years, you were unexpectedly laid off. Or possibly you've been looking for more than a year, and its taking longer than you ever dreamed it would. These are daunting challenges...but they are not too big for God! Nobody likes looking for a job, and very few people are really good at it because it's something that most of us do only a few times in our life. Faith to Find a Job is for those times in your life when you need to refresh your job hunting skills and learn practically how to look for employment in today's job market. Rooted in a personal testimony and success story, Faith to Find a Job is the anatomy of an effective job search...the practical aspects, as well as, the biblical promises that bolster victorious faith. "My last job search took ten months and my testimony is that I was never discouraged." L.C. Brown-Bush Discouragement is a job hunter's archenemy. It makes the process of looking for a job much more painfully than it has to be. Nevertheless, Faith to Find a Job can encourage you to hope, because... "Those who seek the Lord shall not lack any good thing." (Psalm 34:10) "As long as he sought the Lord, the Lord made him to prosper!" (2 Chronicles 26:5)"

A holistic, positive answer to modernist and post-modernist challenges to Christian faith. Recent trends in theology have adapted to what has been assumed to be universally valid scientific thinking, thereby contributing to the erosion of traditional protestant belief. Pointing to parable as a tool of understanding and appealing to aesthetic appreciation as an analogy, the author makes an impassioned call for a return to an assured biblical faith. The answer lies in a fuller epistemology and a profounder ontology to explain the universe and man’s place in it.

Saturday Faith deals with the times between Friday and Sunday which, in Christian parlance, are associated with Good Friday and Easter Sunday. Yet, what can be said about the time between the loss of one hope and the emergence of something new? What about the moments of hopelessness? In Saturday Faith the issue of hopelessness is examined as both an issue found in the Bible and as an experience through which one can travel. Hopelessness is actually a part of the journey of faith. Saturday Faith sets out to examine the stages of faith and demonstrate how one’s theology can fall apart in crisis. In this assessment, one can begin to recognize that, even in places of hopelessness, there is more faith to be found in those Saturday times. Saturday Faith shows how Job, the disciples, and even Jesus experienced hopelessness. What the reader can hear in these pages that if one finds themselves walking through a “Saturday time” in life, they are not as hopeless or alone as they might feel. It may require a shift in thinking, but Saturday is not where the story ends.

Support and wisdom when serious illness strikes Sally Wilke gets it. She has lived with and through the serious chronic illness of someone she cared deeply about. And she has provided pastoral care to individuals and families in similar situations. Waiting for Good News captures her hard-won, helpful, and hope-filled wisdom. Wilke organizes this book around seven questions that those who face serious illness often ask. From "What Is the Diagnosis" to "Where Do I Find More Help?" she accompanies readers on their own journey. The heart of the book is the stories--Wilke's own, those of others who have struggled with severe illness, and accounts from the Bible. Here, readers will find strength, support, and a way forward in a difficult situation. As practical as she is wise, Wilke offers tools, tips, ideas, and resources for reflection and for obtaining additional support. Chapters conclude with questions that may be used for personal reflection and discussion with family members, patients, and support groups. Clergy, other pastoral-care providers, and family and friends of those who struggle with serious illness will find examples and helpful practices to guide their efforts as they partner with those seeking to find their way.

Scholars have made urban mothers living in poverty a focus of their research for decades. These women’s lives can be difficult as they go about searching for housing and decent jobs and struggling to care for their children while surviving on welfare or working at low-wage service jobs and sometimes facing physical or mental health problems. But until now little attention has been paid to an important force in these women’s lives: religion. Based on in-depth interviews with women and pastors, Susan Crawford Sullivan presents poor mothers’ often overlooked views. Recruited from a variety of social service programs, most of the women do not attend religious services, due to logistical challenges or because they feel stigmatized and unwanted at church. Yet, she discovers, religious faith often plays a strong role in their lives as they contend with and try to make sense of the challenges they face. Supportive religious congregations prove important for women who are involved, she finds, but understanding everyday religion entails exploring beyond formal religious organizations. Offering a sophisticated analysis of how faith both motivates and at times constrains poor mothers’ actions, Living Faith reveals the ways it serves as a lens through which many view and interpret their worlds.

Commonly, previous generations of Christian culture emphasize issues that were pertinent to them, and they teach key doctrinal concepts while neglecting that which is essential to the healthy development of a Christian teen. In his book, Bird encourages a balanced approach while exploring faith issues most relevant to teens as they approach the years when they’re forced to grapple with enormous decisions. More specifically, he uncovers an innovative way to think about God’s purpose for an individual’s life (which has the potential to not only affect the way teens approach life, but may also challenge parents and leaders to re-prioritize their own schedules), and then goes on to uncover a biblically based model for understanding God’s will, which happens to be conveniently situated at the center of his purpose for humanity. At a time when it’s more common for a teen to walk away from the faith than it is for them to remain engaged, Lost Teens, Lost Faith provides relevant dialogue generated out of Bird’s experience and his deep desire to see the reversal of this tragic trend. What he uncovers and passes along provides parents with the necessary foundation to lead their children through some of life’s greatest challenges. Bird’s scripturally inspired ideas give parents and teens a framework to begin a conversation of eternal importance.

Humbler Faith Bigger God written by Samuel Wells and has been published by Canterbury Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-03-30 with Religion categories.

Samuel Wells explores the key tenets of Christian belief by engaging with the most widely used arguments against religious faith – that it’s a crutch for the deluded, a fairy tale for the simple minded, the cause of so many wars, a drug for the poor, powerless against suffering, one path among many, and so on. These are serious accusations against Christianity and Samuel takes them seriously, seeking to understand how and why they have taken hold, what part the church has had in making people so resistant to its message and what better stories it can tell in today’s world. Each chapter sets out traditional expressions of Christian beliefs, engages with the arguments against them and then seeks to express those truths afresh as stories that can inform and shape our lives. A study guide for groups is also included.
