The long-untold story of legendary New York mob boss Joe Colombo—by his son, Anthony The original "Dapper Don" Joe Colombo remains the most paradoxical figure in the history of organized crime in the United States. On the one hand, he was a villain who betrayed the boss of the Profaci family to the Mafia Commission, which gave Colombo control of the family and renamed it after him. On the other, he was a hero to Italian-Americans, the passionate activist who founded the Italian-American Civil Rights League and garnered more popular support than most elected officials at the time. Split between the criminal world and the legitimate one, the life and death of Joe Colombo have remained shrouded in secrecy. Now, at long last, Colombo's son Anthony and co-writer Don Capria lift the veil on the father and the godfather. First comprehensive biography of mafia kingpin Joe Colombo, godfather of one of New York's Five Famiilies and Italian-American civil rights champion Surprising revelations about Colombo's life and death, including why it is believed the US government may have been behind Colombo's assassination at the second Italian American Unity Day Rally Dozens of photographs, many published here for the first time

Maverick godfather, a former killer who dared to do things differently. But by taking on Mafia rules and fighting the FBI at the same time it was a battle he could never win. It is picking in the FBI building at police headquarters it was kind of stupid. You know you're not exactly dealing with the faculty at Harvard. Perhaps his biggest mistake was to find the world of civil activism more intoxicating than running a crime family. For a while he got away with it. He was using civil rights as a shield. In my opinion he was the fool. Fame would offer Joe Colombo no protection from a failure to obey the most fundamental Mafia principles. If he had followed the rules of the mob, particularly the mob bosses and stay out of the limelight. If he just operated business and bring money, he would never had a problem.

Anyone familiar with the history of organized crime knows the names: Bonanno, Gambino, Genovese, Lucchese and Colombo. There have been volumes written about that period, some accurate, some not at all. Anthony Colombo, the son of Joseph Colombo Sr., one of those reputed "crime bosses," has written, along with filmmaker and author Don Capria, what he hopes will be the final word on that turbulent time, the role his father played and finally, the true details of his murder. In "Colombo: The Unsolved Murder," the authors look to do more than set the record straight... "My father, Joseph Colombo Sr., was labeled the boss of one of the most notorious crime families in New York's history. Every news article, magazine article, and every book that references him repeats with little detail this as fact. Who my father really was, and who was truly responsible for his death has always been shrouded in mystery'' Colombo said. "Not to me though, as I know the truth of who he was, what he meant to the Italian-American community, and who should be held accountable for his tragic demise" he continued. On June 28th, 1971, Joseph Colombo Sr was shot and mortally wounded leading the Italian Unity Day rally in Columbus Circle. Now over 40 years later, his son and confidant tells the truth surrounding the shooting, the on-going wars with Joey Gallo and his crew, his father's formation of the Italian-American Civil Rights League, and Colombo Sr consulting on The Godfather.

During his short but highly productive career, Joe Colombo (1930-1971) became one of the most inventive stars of Italian design. His work was consistently brilliant and always formally right, displaying the ingenuity and technical finish that has made his name synonymous with the sixties style that became known worldwide. This book documents in sketches, drawings, photographs, models, and prototypes all of Colombo's 51 production projects and contains a complete catalog of his works. Vittorio Fagone places Colombo in the European design context and Ignazio Valentini offers an intriguing portrait of this complex man. Beginning his career as an architect and painter, Joe Colombo moved quickly into interiors and then into designing functional objects. His special talent was in producing spacesaving, compact designs at affordable prices for kitchens, wardrobes, and studios. Virtually all of the objects he created were designed for mass production and consumption. Here are the series of Colombo classics produced during the 1960s the molded plastic Elda chair for Kartell, curved Perspex lamps for O-Luce, and placeware setting for Alitalia; the plastic storage trolley and minikitchen on castors which were among the first successful mobile units with many possible functions; and the later experiments with flexible living spaces and flexible seating that were designed to accommodate the complexities of the modern habitat. Vittorio Fagone is an art historian and critic of contemporary art. He is on the Faculty of Architecture at the University of Milan and a Visiting Professor in the Art Department at New York University. Ignazia Favata Valentini is a professor of engineering at theUniversity of Milan. She was Joe Colombo's assistant from 1968 until his death and now manages and owns the Joe Colombo studio and is curator of the Joe Colombo archive.
