- First-ever comprehensive book on the still lifes of one of India's leading modern painters - Analyzes the development of Chowdhury's still lifes chronologically and features 95 impactful images of the artist's work - Includes an in-depth interview of the artist that reveals how the painter's art is permeated by his universe of ideas and ideals The Afterlife of Silence is the first-ever comprehensive book on the still lifes of Jogen Chowdhury, one of India's leading modern painters. The book takes a close look at the essentials of the European tradition of still life painting and argues that Chowdhury's works, while sharing certain common concerns of the tradition also differ significantly from it, and are firmly rooted in his indigenous situatedness. It explores how, in his still lifes, unregarded, everyday objects are irradiated with new life and unique relational possibilities. It also examines how his still lifes oscillate between life and death, between stillness and animation, a movement that conceptually underpins the cycle of nature and lived life, and how moments of silence and stillness acquire afterlives -with trails of significations that often go beyond the context of particular artworks. The book analyzes the development of Chowdhury's still lifes chronologically; a section deals with the distinctive ways in which his still lifes negotiate with desire - and its obverse, dread - and manage to create autonomous symbolic systems, addressing the nostalgia of inaccessibility. A separate chapter examines how his familiar organic lines, used to define human forms, are used in still life forms as well, and in this context, several of his major works are examined closely. This book features about 80 impactful images of Chowdhury's paintings and an in-depth interview with the artist by the author that reveals how the painter's art is permeated by his universe of ideas and ideals.

"This book, being an inquiry into the creative process, is based on interviews with five significant artists of our time: Meera Mukherjee, Jogen Chowdhury, Manjit Bawa, Arpita Singh and Ganesh Pyne. They articulate, through words and through images, their personal sensibility and a particular worldview. Their vision may find resonances from myth and archetype and technique; yet it is never imitative. Through exploration and experiment, these artists have each arrived at a language of expression uniquely their own; and this language has contributed in some seminal sense to contemporary art in India." "These chapters explain the meaning of originality in its true sense: as the fusion of the new and the old, the forbidden and the familiar - to discover from the worn-out, new images that subvert the original implications - leading us to fresh insights on life and its values today."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. The College Street Coffee House is still a much-revered institution in Kolkata. Its mystique lingers, despite its dilapidated appearance that evokes another era. Intellectuals from a range of disciplines met to discuss compelling ideas in a free-flowing style – the quintessential Bengali adda, punctuated with many cups of coffee. Twenty-six intellectual, political, and cultural icons including Rabin Mandal, Soumitra Chatterjee, Usha Ganguly, Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak, Sabyasachi Bhattacharya, and Ashim Chatterjee share their memories of Coffee House. Their portrait photos and absorbing reminiscences capture the tumultuous and changing intellectual, political, and cultural currents that surged through Bengal from the 1950s to the 1990s. “Such a pleasure to have this account of a great unofficial institution from a disarming multiplicity of perspectives - photographic, personal, and intellectual - and to listen in on its hubbub.”Amit Chaudhuri

For more than two generations of Indians, and cricket fans from elsewhere, Sachin Tendulkar is a name that opened doors and hearts wherever you were on the planet. Even in the days before the social media revolution, Sachin was a truly global icon. It didn’t matter if you were in Sydney or South Africa, Kolkata or Kingston, Sachin’s name was a conversation starter. The teenage wonder who exploded into the global consciousness with his bloodied nose in Pakistan in 1989, before becoming the greatest batting sensation ever, transcended the boundaries of sport. As with Jesse Owens, Ali, Pele and Maradona, Sachin’s role in making Indian cricket a household phenomenon globally can never be underestimated. It was not just the runs he scored. It was the manner in which he scored them – with matchless flair, scoring 100 international hundreds in the process. How do we celebrate Sachin on his 50th birthday? The prodigy with the baby voice, scoring hundreds in abundance with the exuberance of the teenager that he was then? The legend who won India many a close encounter? Or the genius around whom a very good Indian side was built in the 1990s? For a generation of fans who grew up in the 1980s and 90s, it was always Sachin and then daylight. Many of them have also passed on now, but the stories they shared with their children will always remain. On his 50th birthday it is time to add to these stories. The very best from India and beyond on the man they adore. Like Sachin, his stories are also immortal.
