One of the most significant events in the history of Western civilization was the cosmological revolution of the 16th and 17th centuries. Among the most salient factors in this change, described by Alexandre Koyré as the ‘destruction of the cosmos’ inherited from ancient Greece, were Copernican heliocentrism and the substitution of a homogeneous universe for the hierarchical cosmos of the Platonic and Aristotelian tradition. Starting with a new approach to the issue of the presence of Islamic astronomical devices in Copernicus’ work and a thorough reappraisal of the cosmological views of Paracelsus, the book deals mainly with the abolition of cosmological dualism and the ways in which it affected the decline of astrology over the 17th century. Other related topics include planetary order and theories of world harmony, the cause of planetary motion in the Tychonic world system or the discussion on comets in Germany through the first presentation of a manuscript treatise by Michael Maestlin on the great comet of 1618.

Covering both the history of mathematics and of philosophy, Descartes's Mathematical Thought reconstructs the intellectual career of Descartes most comprehensively and originally in a global perspective including the history of early modern China and Japan. Especially, it shows what the concept of "mathesis universalis" meant before and during the period of Descartes and how it influenced the young Descartes. In fact, it was the most fundamental mathematical discipline during the seventeenth century, and for Descartes a key notion which may have led to his novel mathematics of algebraic analysis.

The book records the essential discoveries of mathematical and computational scientists in chronological order, following the birth of ideas on the basis of prior ideas ad infinitum. The authors document the winding path of mathematical scholarship throughout history, and most importantly, the thought process of each individual that resulted in the mastery of their subject. The book implicitly addresses the nature and character of every scientist as one tries to understand their visible actions in both adverse and congenial environments. The authors hope that this will enable the reader to understand their mode of thinking, and perhaps even to emulate their virtues in life.

"An impressive culmination of meticulous research into original sources, this definitive study constitutes the first full-length history of the Arithmetic Triangle." — Mathematics of Computation Pascal's Arithmetical Triangle was named for the seventeenth-century French philosopher/mathematician Blaise Pascal, though he did not invent it. A never-ending equilateral triangle of numbers that follow the rule of adding the two numbers above to get the number below, it appears much earlier in the literature of Hindu and Arabic mathematics and continues to fascinate Western mathematicians. Two sides are comprised of "all 1s," and because the triangle is infinite, there is no "bottom side." This book by A. W. F. Edwards, Professor of Biometry at the University of Cambridge, explores Pascal's Arithmetical Triangle and the way it has been studied, enjoyed, and used by mathematicians throughout history. "A fascinating book...giving new insights into the early history of probability theory and combinatorics and incidentally providing much stimulating material for teachers of mathematics." — G. A. Bernard, International Statistical Institute Review "Scrupulously researched . . . carries the reader along in a rewarding manner. It is a scientific who-dun-it and one must admire the author for the scholarly yet unpedantic manner in which he disperses some of the mists of antiquity." — A. W. Kemp, Biometrics "Recommended not only to historians and mathematicians, but also to students seeking to put some life into the dry treatment of these topics to which they have doubtless been subjected." — Ivor Grattan-Guinness, Annals of Science

The Invisible History Of The Rosicrucians written by Tobias Churton and has been published by Simon and Schuster this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-09-09 with Body, Mind & Spirit categories.

The first complete historical and philosophical investigation into the “invisible fraternity” of the Rosicrucians • Contains the latest research on the origins of the Rosicrucian movement • Presents the ties between Rosicrucianism, Freemasonry, and the Templars • Written by a “perfected” Knight of the Rose Croix and the Pelican (18th degree, Ancient and Accepted Rite) For nearly 400 years, incredible myths and stories have been woven around the “invisible” Brothers of the Rose Cross, the Rosicrucians. It is said that they possessed the secret of man and God, that they could turn lead into gold, that they governed Europe in secret, that theirs was the true philosophy of Freemasonry, and that they could save--or destroy--the world. In The Invisible History of the Rosicrucians, Tobias Churton, a “perfected” Knight of the Rose Croix and the Pelican (18th degree, Ancient and Accepted Rite), presents the first definitive historical and philosophical view of this mysterious brotherhood. Starting at its beginnings in Germany in 1603, Churton unveils the truth behind the complex story that underlies the Rosicrucian movement. He explains its purpose, the motives of its earliest creators, and the manifestos “accidentally” published in the 17th century that emerged at precisely the time when modern science was emerging. He details the people who influenced its development--including Johannes Kepler, Robert Fludd, and Sir Francis Bacon--and the ties between the Rosicrucians, Freemasons, and Templars. He also shows how Rosicrucianism shaped the mythology and spiritual consciousness of both North and South America and reveals that there are many Rosicrucian fraternities still active throughout the world today.
