Johannes Hartlieb, seit 1440 Leibarzt am Münchner Hof Albrechts III., war politischer Berater, Diplomat und Verfasser von Sachtexten und literarischen Werken. Sein "Alexander" ist eine als Fürstenspiegel konzipierte deutsche Übersetzung einer lateinischen Alexanderroman-Kompilation und wurde im Auftrag Albrechts III. geschrieben. Das Leben des griechischen Herrschers und Welteroberers Alexander (356-323 v. Chr.) war einer der beliebtesten Stoffe und übte nicht zuletzt aufgrund exotischer Elemente sowie der in Alexander verkörperten "superbia" eine große Faszination auf mittelalterliche Leser aus. Hartliebs Bearbeitung vermittelt neben historischem, geographischem und naturkundlichem Wissen am Beispiel eines vorbildlichen Herrschers fürstliche Qualitäten im Sinne des höfischen Publikums. Der Text ist in 18 Handschriften überliefert; bis 1670 erschienen 18 gedruckte Ausgaben. Der vorliegende Codex aus dem Jahr 1455 in bairisch gefärbtem Ostschwäbisch, von dem Augsburger Ratsherrn Hector Mülich und seinem Bruder Jörg in einer Bastarda geschrieben, ist mit 33 kolorierten Federzeichnungen Hectors geschmückt. Für seine Bilder verlegte Hector Mülich, der auch Verfasser einer Stadtchronik war, die Geschichte Alexanders ins Augsburg seiner Zeit. Die Handschrift kam im 16. Englische Version: The "Secretum Secretorum", a 10th century pseudo-Aristotelian compendium, compiled in Syrian (Persian-influenced) circles of hermetic thought, is a kind of mirror for princes in the form of a letter to Alexander the Great, with many pieces of advice interspersed with all sorts of miracle stories. It deals with the virtues of rulers, the art of war and physiognomy but also contains extensive teachings on health. It was completely translated into German for the first time in 1282 by Hiltgart von Hürnheim, a Cistercian nun in Zimmern (c. 1255 - after 1299) who came from a noble family in Franconia's Ries. Hiltgart's rather literal translation followed the Latin model of her cousin Rudolf, a Cistercian monk in Kaisheim. This manuscript from the middle of the 15th century comes from the Cistercian Seligenthal convent in Landshut, which was subordinate to the Abbot of Kaisheim, like Zimmern. Hiltgart's translation still lived on in the 16th century in prints by Johann Bämler (1531) and Heinrich Stainer in Augsburg (1530 and 1532). // Autor: Peter Czoik // Datum: 2016

Any attempt to understand the roles that textbooks played for early modern teachers and pupils must begin with the sobering realization that the field includes many books that the German word Lehrbuch and its English counterpart do not call to mind. The early modern classroom was shaken by the same knowledge explosion that took place in individual scholars' libraries and museums, and transformed by the same printers, patrons and vast cultural movements that altered the larger world it served. In the fifteenth through seventeenth centuries, the urban grammar school, the German Protestant Gymnasium and the Jesuit College, all of which did so much to form the elites of early modern Europe, took shape; the curricula of old and new universities fused humanistic with scholastic methods in radically novel ways. By doing so, they claimed a new status for both the overt and the tacit knowledge that made their work possible. Making Women's Medicine Masculine challenges the common belief that prior to the eighteenth century men were never involved in any aspect of women's healthcare in Europe. Using sources ranging from the writings of the famous twelfth-century female practitioner, Trota of Salerno, all the way to the great tomes of Renaissance male physicians, and covering both medicine and surgery, this study demonstrates that men slowly established more and more authority in diagnosing and prescribing treatments for women's gynaecological conditions (especially infertility) and even certain obstetrical conditions. Even if their 'hands-on' knowledge of women's bodies was limited by contemporary mores, men were able to establish their increasing authority in this and all branches of medicine due to their greater access to literacy and the knowledge contained in books, whether in Latin or the vernacular. As Monica Green shows, while works written in French, Dutch, English, and Italian were sometimes addressed to women, nevertheless even these were often re-appropriated by men, both by practitioners who treated women and by laymen interested to learn about the 'secrets' of generation. While early in the period women were considered to have authoritative knowledge on women's conditions (hence the widespread influence of the alleged authoress 'Trotula'), by the end of the period to be a woman was no longer an automatic qualification for either understanding or treating the conditions that most commonly afflicted the female sex - with implications of women's exclusion from production of knowledge on their own bodies extending to the present day.
