To come into the life of John and Catherine, one has to enter the misty mountains of Tennessee. The setting is the Cumberland Mountains above Huntland. The story of a brutal marriage of poverty, love, sorrow and sacrifice. Catherine is the young redheaded valley girl, John Watson, a moonshiner, brought to his beloved Tally Top. She in turn brought six children into the world for him, some in his whiskey cave. She wasn't your traditional mountain girl. She carried water, lots of water, to make whisky. Her babies were taught quietness, and love, never fighting. She taught them to read, do numbers, and watch the eagles soar over the canyon. Then, disaster, John was caught moonshining. She stayed on his mountain, dug and sold ginseng, berries, and nuts to exist. She ate bullfrogs and rabbits. Then John came home, but her brutal life continued. She did what she could to survive and she never complained. A book of love in Appalachia.

One of the most colorful characters in modern history, Catherine II of Russia began her life as a minor German princess, until the childless Empress Elizabeth and Catherine's own scheming mother married her off to the Grand Duke Peter of Russia at age sixteen. By thirty-three, she had overthrown her husband in a bloodless coup and established herself as Empress of the multinational Russian Empire, the largest territorial political unit in modern history.Portrayed both as a political genius who restored to Russia the glory it had known in the days of Peter the Great and as a despotic foreign adventuress who usurped the Russian throne, murdered her rivals, and tyrannized her subjects, she was, by all accounts, an extraordinary woman. Catherine the Great, the first popular biography of the empress based on contemporary scholarship, provides a vivid portrait of Catherine as a mother, a lover, and, above all, an extremely savvy ruler. Concentrating on her long reign (1762-96), John Alexander examines all aspects of Catherine's life and career: the brilliant political strategies by which she won the acceptance of a nationalistic elite; her expansive foreign policy; the domestic reforms with which she revamped the Russian military, political structure, and economy; and, of course, her infamous love life.Beginning with an account of the dramatic palace revolt by which Catherine unseated her husband and a background chapter describing the circumstances of her early childhood and marriage, Alexander then proceeds chronologically through the thirty-four years of her reign. Presenting Catherine in more human terms than previous biographers have, Alexander includes numerous quotations from her reminiscences and notes. We learn, for instance, not only the names and number of her lovers, but her understanding of what many considered a shocking licentiousness. "The trouble is," she wrote, "that my heart would not willingly remain one hour without love."The result of twenty years' research by one of America's leading narrative historians of modern Russia, this truly impressive work offers a much-needed, balanced reappraisal of one of history's most scandal-ridden figures.

Nominated for the 2019 Carnegie Medal. Growing up in vibrant, crowded Nairobi, Makena has only one dream: to climb Mount Kenya like her hero, her mountain guide father. But when her beautiful world is shattered, she finds that in the city's dark places there are a thousand ways to fall, each more deadly than any crevasse. In a world of strangers, does she dare trust Snow, whose ballet dreams are haunted by a past she's still running from? And is the sparkling fox friend or foe? After a fresh start in the Scottish Highlands turns bad, Makena flees to the mountains. But will they betray her or be the making of her?

Catherine Murphy written by and has been published by Rizzoli Publications this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-04-05 with Art categories.

Published by Skira Rizzoli in association with Peter Freeman, Inc. Catherine Murphy has been celebrated as a representational painter of exceptional precision, and this, her first monograph, Catherine Murphy, surveys her complete work, which unites American Minimalism and American naturalist painting. Murphy has evolved a style that combines obsessive authenticity with Minimalist rigor. From the shaded lawns of the New Jersey suburbs to the Massachusetts woods, from childhood interiors to self-portraits and detailed images of buttons and dust, carpeted stairs, or a stuccoed ceiling, Murphy always paints and draws from life, often the domestic and quotidian. John Yau notes in his introduction that, “her attachment to the commonplace is not just amatter of convenience, of painting and drawing what she can see from her window or inside herapartment. In her choice of subjects—and I am speaking here of Murphy’s entire career, which stretches across five decades—the artist has made a conscious decision to stay true to both what she could observe and to her own working-class background, and the aesthetic choices that people of that milieuare constantly making, from illustrated calendars and inexpensive objets d’art to wallpaper andrefrigerator magnets.”
