A moving cultural biography of abolitionist martyr John Brown, by one of the most important African-American intellectuals of the twentieth century. In the history of slavery and its legacy, John Brown looms large as a hero whose deeds partly precipitated the Civil War. As Frederick Douglass wrote: "When John Brown stretched forth his arm ... the clash of arms was at hand." DuBois's biography brings Brown stirringly to life and is a neglected classic.

Reading The Old Man written by Bruce A. Ronda and has been published by Univ. of Tennessee Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008 with History categories.

"In this absorbing book, Bruce Ronda examines the representations of Brown chronologically, ranging from Thoreau's "Plea for Captain John Brown" - with its ardent defense of Brown as a patriot, Transcendentalist, and true New Englander - through treatments by anonymous southern writers and well-known authors such as John Greenleaf Whittier, Herman Melville, Richard Henry Dana, Frederick Douglass, William Dean Howells, and E. A. Robinson. Ronda then considers the major treatments of Brown in the early to mid-twentieth century by W. E. B. DuBois, Stephen Vincent Benet, and Robert Penn Warren. Of particular interest are discussions of a 1930s poem by Muriel Rukeyser, Truman Nelson's 1960 novel The Surveyor, and artwork by Jacob Lawrence. He concludes with studies of novels by three contemporary authors: Russell Banks, Michelle Cliff, and Bruce Olds."--BOOK JACKET.

Excerpt from John Brown The members of this firm are "too numerous to mention" in detail, but a few may be named. Amos Lawrence and Henry Wilson, of Boston, William H. Seward and Horace Greeley, of New York, Salmon P. Chase and Joshua R. Giddings, of Ohio, not forgetting Fred Douglas, of Canada, and James Redpath, the cosmopolite. Algebraically speaking, these can be regarded as the exponents of those powers, which taken together make up the powerful concern of John Brown and Company. This article is to be devoted to the merits and demerits of the Senior partner, who is grown gray in the service of the concern, as in "sin and iniquity." Previous to the Kansas troubles, John Brown was unknown as a hero and martyr, although he was not unknown to a peculiar fame. Before that he was John Brown no less than he is now, but he had never had a chance previous thereto, to carry on his trade with a "licence of free foot," such as that distracted land furnished him withal. James Redpath, the "devoted friend" of the subject under consideration; tells us that "for thirty years, Brown secretly cherished the idea of being the leader of a servile insurrection; the American Moses, predestined by Omnipotence to lead the servile nations in our Southern States to freedom." He told the writer of this, that he had been all over the South, had many warm friends there and was fully posted as to the condition and disposition of the people. It is most probable, however, that he was known on his southern tour as Bill Smith, Sam Jones, Simon Suggs, or anything else rather than John Brown. John Brown (May 9, 1800 - December 2, 1859) holds a unique place in American history, often viewed as a force for good and an evil man at the same time. Brown was a revolutionary abolitionist in the United States who became famous in his own time for practicing armed insurrection as a means to abolish slavery for good. He led the Pottawatomie Massacre during which five men were killed in 1856 in Bleeding Kansas and became notorious for his attempted raid at Harpers Ferry in 1859. For that, he was tried and executed for treason against the state of Virginia, murder, and conspiracy. Brown has been called "the most controversial of all 19th-century Americans." Brown's attempt in 1859 to start a liberation movement among enslaved African Americans in Harpers Ferry, Virginia (now West Virginia) electrified the nation. He was tried for treason against the state of Virginia, the murder of five pro-slavery Southerners, and inciting a slave insurrection and was subsequently hanged. Southerners alleged that his rebellion was the tip of the abolitionist iceberg and represented the wishes of the Republican Party to end slavery. Historians agree that the Harpers Ferry raid in 1859 escalated tensions that, a year later, led to secession and the Civil War. Brown's final speech, along with other words and interviews spoken by Brown during and after his trial and imprisonment are contained here in a collection of Primary Accounts of John Brown. Included are the last letters to his family, his last speech, his interview in prison, and the final note he wrote the day he was executed which predicted that slavery would only be abolished through the spilling of blood.

John Brown written by Frederick Douglass and has been published by CreateSpace this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-07 with categories.

In substance, this address, now for the first time published, was prepared several years ago, and has been delivered in many parts of the North. Its publication now in pamphlet form is due to its delivery at Harper's Ferry, W. Va., on Decoration day, 1881, and to the fact that the proceeds from the sale of it are to be used toward the endowment of a John Brown Professorship in Storer College, Harper's Ferry-an institution mainly devoted to the education of colored youth. That such an address could be delivered at such a place, at such a time, is strikingly significant, and illustrates the rapid, vast and wonderful changes through which the American people have been passing since 1859. Twenty years ago Frederick Douglass and others were mobbed in the city of Boston, and driven from Tremont Temple for uttering sentiments concerning John Brown similar to those contained in this address. Yet now he goes freely to the very spot where John Brown committed the offense which caused all Virginia to clamor for his life, and without reserve or qualification, commends him as a hero and martyr in the cause of liberty.
