John Locke was an English physician as well as an influential philosopher and Enlightenment thought leader. He is generally considered the father of liberalism and believed that all knowledge was based on experience alone. Furthermore, he is one of the most important contract theorists in the early Age of Enlightenment. His philosophy influenced the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution of the United States, the constitution of revolutionary France, and through this route most constitutions of liberal states. He argued to Locke that a government is legitimate only if it has the consent of the governed and protects the natural rights of life, liberty, and property. If these conditions are not met, subjects have a right to resist those who govern. Gröls Classics - English Edition

Two Treatises of Government is a work by an English teacher and philosopher John Locke about the state origin and its role in the society, the “civilized” form of government in contradiction to the tyrannical monarchy that became a basis for the civil society idea. In The First Treatise, Locke analyzes the malignancy of a divine origin theory of any state power and proves that this idea will inevitably lead to poverty in one form or another. Eventually, this divine origin (jure divino) doctrine will put an end to every government. In The Second Treatise, Locke explains an origin of the state as a natural result of concluding the so-called “social agreement”. According to Locke, people united and reached this social agreement in order to defend everybody’s rights more efficiently.

John Locke's theory of property is perhaps the most distinctive and the most influential aspect of his political theory. In this book James Tully uses an hermeneutical and analytical approach to offer a revolutionary revision of early modern theories of property, focusing particularly on that of Locke. Setting his analysis within the intellectual context of the seventeenth century, Professor Tully overturns the standard interpretations of Locke's theory, showing that it is not a justification of private property. Instead he shows it to be a theory of individual use rights within a framework of inclusive claim rights. He links Locke's conception of rights not merely to his ethical theory, but to the central arguments of his epistemology, and illuminates the way in which Locke's theory is tied to his metaphysical views of God and man, his theory of revolution and his account of a legitimate polity.

As one of the early Enlightenment philosophers in England, John Locke sought to bring reason and critical intelligence to the discussion of the origins of civil society. Endeavoring to reconstruct the nature and purpose of government, a social contract theory is proposed. The Second Treatise sets forth a detailed discussion of how civil society came to be and the nature of its inception. Locke's discussion of tacit consent, separation of powers, and the right of citizens to revolt against repressive governments, has made The Second Treatise one of the most influential essays in the history of political philosophy.

Johnson continues her analysis of the place of honor in modernity with a close examination of honor’s treatment by two Enlightenment philosophers: Locke and Rousseau, concluding that Enlightenment thought is inherently problematic when it comes to developing moral obligation. Political scientists, students of philosophy, and communitarians alike will find intriguing questions in this book, which calls on us to recognize the flaws of the Enlightenment liberalism that not only determines how we govern ourselves, but how we think about our family, society, and economy.
