El universo en un cubo es un trabajo de investigación sobre tres series de casas desarrolladas por el arquitecto John Q. Hejduk: Casas Texas, Casas Diamond y Casas Muro. La hipótesis sostenida es que, en estas series de casas, desarrolladas entre 1954 y 1974, existe una expansión del concepto de orden en arquitectura. El concepto de orden tiene una incidencia en operaciones tan fundamentales y básicas del ejercicio arquitectónico que es frecuentemente pasado de alta en discusiones contemporáneas. La atención prestada en esta investigación a este problema tiene que ver con retomar el asombro por una de las herramientas más poderosas de la arquitectura: su capacidad de ordenar. El estudio se concentra en dos aspectos particulares de estas casas; su lógica de organización interna y la definición de sus límites. Y, son estas condiciones particulares de las casas y su conexión con otros ejemplos de la historia del arte y la arquitectura lo que permite entender que la manipulación del orden es una fuente inagotable de configuraciones formales y, por ende, de conocimiento y significados poéticos en arquitectura.
