This book defends the claims of historical-critical research into the New Testament as necessary for theological interpretation. Presenting an interdisciplinary study about the nature of theological language, this book considers the modern debate in theological hermeneutics beginning with the Barth-Bultmann debate and moving towards a theory of language which brings together historical-critical and theological interpretation. These insights are then applied to the exegesis of theologically significant texts of the Gospel of John in the light of the hermeneutical discussion. Drawing together the German and Anglo-American hermeneutical traditions, and discussing issues related to postmodern hermeneutical theories, this book develops a view of the New Testament as the reflection of a struggle for language in which the early Church worked to bring about a language through which the new faith could be understood.

Karl Barth's lectures on the first chapter of the Gospel of John, delivered at Muenster in 1925-26 and at Bonn in 1933, came at an important time in his life, when he was turning his attention more fully to dogmatics. Theological interpretation was thus his primary concern, especially the relation between revelation and the witness to revelation, which helped to shape his formulation of the role of the written (and spoken) word vis-a-vis the incarnate Word. The text is divided into three sections - John 1:1-18, 19-34, 35-51, with the largest share of the book devoted to the first section. Each section begins with Barth's own translation, followed by verse-by -verse and phrase-by-phrase commentary on the Greek text. Although Barth's interpretation is decidedly theological, he does take up questions of philology and textual criticism more thoroughly than in his other works. Much has happened in Johannine scholarship since these lectures were first delivered, yet they remain valuable today - 100 years after Barth's birth - both for their insights into the gospel and into Karl Barth.

Sense Perception And Testimony In The Gospel According To John written by Sunny Kuan-Hui Wang and has been published by Mohr Siebeck this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-06-02 with Religion categories.

In this book, Sunny Kuan-Hui Wang explores the relationship between sense perception and testimony in the Gospel of John. While Johannine scholars tend to focus on one or the other, she shows that sense perception and testimony are both significant and are used together with the intention of drawing readers into the narrative so that they become witnesses in an emotionally engaged way. It is argued that John's use of sense perception together with testimony is rooted in Jewish literature. Yet John also employs a Graeco-Roman rhetorical technique, enargeia , which appeals to the persuasive power of sense perception to make his narrative vivid. John does not downplay sense perception. Rather, he uses it in the context of testimony as a means of persuasion to draw the readers, in their imagination, into the experience of the first disciples and thus deeper into faith and witness.

The Gospel of John occupies a special place in the Bible because it focuses on life. Its writer, the apostle John, had a specific burden related to life and building, and his ministry was fully focused on these two matters. His Gospel reveals that God is manifested as the Word and becomes the Spirit to enter into us in order to be our life, but this marvelous fact is not the goal; it is a procedure to achieve an ultimate goal. The Gospel of John says that the Word, who is God, became flesh and tabernacled among us. Life is the procedure, and the tabernacle is the goal. God came to be our life so that He might tabernacle in us and among us, that we might receive Him as life for the building up of the house of God.

Some two thousand years ago, a man appeared in Palestine, a man who was different from any other person in the world. He made some stupendous claims. He claimed to be the Son of God, to be able to forgive sins, to be eternal. Moreover, He claimed that He had come from God and that the words that He spoke were God's words. And He backed up these claims by casting out demons, giving sight to the blind, and raising the dead. He was indeed special in every gracious way. Throughout human history, there has been no one like Him. He alone had two natures: He was both God and man in one person. He alone was perfect in every way: in thought, word, and deed. He alone had miraculous powers that could heal the sick, make the invalid whole, and calm the troubled sea. He alone came to this world like no other person. He came specifically to die for sinners and to make salvation accessible to the world. Who is this man? He is Jesus of Nazareth. He is the Son of God. He is the Savior of sinners. He is the person you will read about in this book, The Uniqueness of Jesus Christ.
