On April 15, 2011, the Maryvale Golf Course celebrates its Golden Anniversary. Opening Day at Maryvale was a well-chronicled event in the newspapers of the day. The book first takes you on a look back to April 15, 1961 and provides the stories of two individuals who were key participants at that glorious event. Within its fifty years, the golf course has been a second-home to many golfers passionate about the game. These difference-makers share their memories of the fabled fairways of Maryvale. The west side course was host to major golf events highlighted by the Don Sanderson Ford Invitational and Johnny Miller Pro-Am. These events showcased Arizona’s best golfers. William Godfrey takes you on a special five-decade-journey and introduces you to the people and events that shaped its history and those who will impact its future. This is his second book. Here is what others said about his first book, ‘Papago Park—Th e Golf Course and its History: “It’s truly a book that everyone who lives in the Valley and plays golf at Papago should read. Great work . . . it will be in my possession forever.” -Terry Beels, 1968 Papago Club Champion “It is one of the greatest short story books . . . it is an outstanding read!” —Greg Ellis, PGA, host of ‘Bunker-to-Bunker,’ KTAR-AM radio “Will Godfrey’s wonderful book captures the story, humanism and feel of Papago’s past, present and future. It is great reading for any lover of the game.” —Peter Longo, PGA Professional and International trick-shot-artist “If you’ve ever experienced Papago, whether as an Arizonan or visitor, I recommend this addition to your golf library. It will certainly become a part of Arizona’s golf literary history.” —Forrest Richardson, golf course architect and author

This is an instructional manual covering the fundamentals of the golf swing, the short game, putting, and routine development. The mental game; right brain versus left brain thinking, creating a feeling storehouse, concentration in its purest form, temperament and a historical look at the greats and not so greats of the game-circa 1920 to the Tiger Woods era. Included are the individuals who influenced my development as a golfer, a caddie's view from inside the ropes, and a look at the world of golf from the inside out. Any player-no matter the skill level-hitting a golf ball does so in three steps: * sets up to the ball * swings at the ball * creates an impact This sets up this framework . . . I. Setup II. Swing III. Impact Within those roman numerals are eight fundamentals, obtained from Ben Hogan's book, Ben Hogan's Five Lessons: The Modern Fundamentals of Golf. The book, which began as a series of five articles that first appeared in the magazine Sports Illustrated on March 11, 1957, evolved into a book that was published in the latter part of 1957. You are encouraged to read or reread Five Lessons as Hogan's swing theory will become that much clearer. Each of the aforementioned eight fundamental is supported by quotes from some of the masters-Bobby Jones (who held degrees in English literature, engineering, and law), Gene Sarazen, Walter Hagen, Bryon Nelson, Sam Snead, Ben Hogan (Snead, Hogan, and Nelson were all born within seven months of one another in 1912. Collectively, they won almost 200 PGA tour events!). Countless players were inspired by these greats-Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player, Billy Casper, Lee Trevino, Tom Watson; Northern California products: Tony Lema, Ken Venturi, Bob Rosburg, John Brodie, George Archer, Dick Lotz, John Lotz, Ron Cerrudo, Bob Boldt, Jim Wichers, Johnie Miller, Ray Leach, Ross Randle, Roger Maltbie, Forrest Fezler, Eric Batten, transplanted golf professional Shivas Irons, and many, many other great players. Let's not forget one who competed with Jones, Hagen, et Al.: Olin Dutra. From the Inside Out also includes quotes from one of golf's finest instructor, Percy Boomer. For those that learn visually, the pictures and diagrams alone will give you a greater understanding of the golf swing. The best part of purchasing this book? Eighty-eight percent of the proceeds from the sale of this book will be evenly distributed to the Ben Hogan Foundation, the Jim Langley Scholarship Fund, the Francis Ouimet Scholarship fund and the First Tee Program. The other 12 percent will go to the publisher, lawyers (of course) and what's left will go to green fees and gratuities. On a personal note, this book is worth the price of admission as it will give you a real glimpse at the crown prince of Golf, Walter Hagen.

There has never been a better time to learn golf, and if you've come this far, it's probably because you've figured that out on your own. By its nature, golf is uniquely suited for a social-distancing world-it's a game played over a vast outdoor space, a worthwhile source of exercise, a diversion for the mind. To truly appreciate golf, however, you need to get past all the intimidating elements that might have kept you away until now. It's a hard game, for starters, and it brings with it an assortment of equipment and customs that might overwhelm anyone coming in cold. Every golfer has been a bad golfer at some point-many of us still are!-and you'd be surprised how much of everything you can pick up as you go. Our purpose here is to give you the basics-not only how to hit a golf ball, but what you need to hit the ball with, and anything else necessary to start your golf journey on the right foot (speaking of which, you don't need golf shoes right away). The Hall of Fame golfer-turned-commentator Johnny Miller once described teaching his kids how to play golf as starting out by letting them whack balls into a pond because it was fun to see the splash. Notably, there was no talk about how to hold a club, how to swing it, or anything else technical. Does that mean you don't ever need lessons to get better? No, a good coach will certainly help you improve. When you move from the phase where you're just trying to whack it to where you actually start thinking about mechanics, you stiffen up-and you probably have trouble even making contact. Instead, stay connected to the feeling of swinging the club with some speed, not hitting "at" a ball. You don't need a swing thought beyond: Get to a balanced finish and hold it for three seconds.
