At first glance, Theodor W. Adorno’s critical social theory and Gershom Scholem’s scholarship of Jewish mysticism could not seem farther removed from one another. To begin with, they also harbored a mutual hostility. But their first conversations in 1938 New York were the impetus for a profound intellectual friendship that lasted thirty years and produced more than 220 letters. These letters discuss the broadest range of topics in philosophy, religion, history, politics, literature, and the arts – as well as the life and the work of Adorno and Scholem’s mutual friend Walter Benjamin. Unfolding with the dramatic tension of a historic novel, the correspondence tells the story of these two intellectuals who faced tragedy, destruction, and loss, but also participated in the efforts to reestablish a just and dignified society after World War II. Scholem immigrated to Palestine before the war and developed his pioneering scholarship of Jewish mysticism before and during the problematic establishment of a Jewish state. Adorno escaped Germany to England, and then to America, returning to Germany in 1949 to participate in the efforts to rebuild and democratize German society. Despite the differences in the lifepaths and worldviews of Adorno and Scholem, their letters are evidence of mutual concern for intellectual truth and hope for a more just society in the wake of historical disaster. The letters reveal for the first time the close philosophical proximity between Adorno’s critical theory and Scholem’s scholarship of mysticism and messianism. Their correspondence touches on questions of reason and myth, progress and regression, heresy and authority, and the social dimensions of redemption. Above all, their dialogue sheds light on the power of critical, materialistic analysis of history to bring about social change and prevent repetition of the disasters of the past.

Uwe Johnson bekundete Ende der 1960er Jahre, das Interesse an der Religion nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg verloren zu haben und über keine religiösen Bindungen (mehr) zu verfügen. Demgegenüber zeugen seine Romane, vom Erstling »Ingrid Babendererde« bis zum Opus magnum »Jahrestage«, von einem überaus produktiven Umgang mit dem Buch der Bücher, der Bibel. Die zahlreichen Zitate und Anspielungen auf die Heilige Schrift wurden in der vorliegenden Studie umfänglich systematisiert, in eine diskursive Ordnung überführt und auf ihre Funktion(en) hin befragt. Im Zentrum der Bibelrezeption Johnsons steht vor dem Hintergrund des Zivilisationsbruchs in Auschwitz eine doppelte narrative Ethik, in der ethische Komplexe im Medium der Narration reflektiert und zugleich narrativ vorgeführt werden. Uwe Johnson declared at the end of the 1960s that he had lost interest in religion after the Second World War and that he no longer had any religious ties. In contrast, the novels by the Mecklenburg author, from his first novel "Ingrid Babendererde" to the opus magnum "Jahrestage", bear witness to an extremly productive use of the Bible. The numerous quotations and allusions to the Bible have been comprehensively systematized in this study, transferred into a discursive order and questioned as to their function(s). Against the background of civilisation breakout at Auschwitz, Johnson's biblical reception focuses on a double narrative ethic, in which ethical complexes are reflected in the medium of narration and at the same time presented in a narrative way.

Das Archiv hat Konjunktur. War es früher lediglich ein Magazin, ein Aufbewahrungsort für Dokumente, eine Sammlung literarischer Hinterlassenschaften, so hat sich seine Funktion in den letzten Jahrzehnten radikal gewandelt. Wurden früher Schätze aus der Vergangenheit konserviert, öffnet sich das Archiv der Gegenwart: Beschränkte man sich auf den Erwerb von Nachlässen, werden heutzutage bereits Konvolute von jüngeren Autor*innen aufgenommen, womit dem Archiv eine Definitionsmacht bei der Kanonbildung zufällt. Nachlassbewusstsein ist bei Schriftsteller*innen ausgeprägter als in früheren Zeiten. Das Archiv bestimmt die literarische Produktion, sofern sich der Text selbst nicht gleich als Archiv versteht. Das Archiv entwickelt selbst kulturelle Praktiken, wird dank der Digitalisierung von Beständen zum virtuellen Ort der Wissensproduktion, durch die Ausstellung des Originals und seiner Aura andererseits zum Museum. Neben der Erweiterung traditioneller Archivarbeit um transnationale Forschungsfelder, Autorenbibliotheken und Verlagsarchive steht im Mittelpunkt des Bandes die Frage nach den Aufgaben eines Archivs im digitalen 21. Jahrhundert.
