This report summarizes, interprets and comparatively discusses the results of research and development performed on the joining of gamma titanium aluminides during the past two decades. Although organized and presented by joining process, many of the observations made and relationships developed, particularly those regarding the weldability and welding metallurgy of gamma titanium aluminides, are broadly applicable. Generally, the basic welding processes and techniques utilized in the fusion and solid -state friction welding of conventional titanium alloys can also be applied to the welding of gamma titanium aluminides. However, the welding process parameters must be optimized, and in some instances the welding system significantly modified, to provide a comparatively slow weld cooling rate that minimize the potential for solid-state weld cracking, and that promotes the formation of a weld zone micro structure that exhibits suitable mechanical properties. Control of the weld cooling rate and the application of a postweld heat treatment can be used to generate a wide range of crack-free weld zone microstructures that correspondingly offer a range of mechanical property combinations. Gamma titanium aluminides can also be effectively joined using diffusion welding and conventional and diffusion brazing techniques.

This proceedings volume includes contributions on both fundamental and practical aspects of metallic aluminides (Ti, Fe, Ni and others) for elevated temperature and high-performance applications. Topics covered in this title include: alloy and microstructure development and design; process development in ingot melting/casting and near-net-shape casting, wrought processing, and fabrication; component forming; microstructure-property relationships; deformation and fracture processes; environment effects including coating development; joining and machining; engine tests and applications; and, new concepts and developments. The objective of the symposium, held at the TMS 2008 Annual Meeting, was to share and discuss the advances made since the last two major intermetallics symposia, ISSI (2002) and ISGTA (2003), and to steer and stimulate the future research and development of structural aluminide alloys.

The 106 papers were selected from the presentations and have undergone stringent peer review. They consider nearly every aspect of current gamma-alloy technology, such as fundamental science, alloy development and design, process development, flow and fracture, creep behavior, microstructure and property evaluation, environmental behavior, and applications. The specific topics include powder metallurgy structures for use in various high-temperature aerospace applications, experiments and atomistic simulations of the deformation of polysynthetically twinned single crystals with near-hard orientations, the interplay of thermodynamics and transformation kinetics on microstructure development, solid solution strengthening mechanisms, studying localized strain at notches using displacement mapping and microstructural characterization, and the influence of gaseous species on the oxidation behavior at high temperature. The illustrations tend to be of high quality.

Titanium matrix composites (TMCs) have been extensively evaluated for their potential to replace conventional superalloys in high temperature structural applications, with significant weight-savings while maintaining comparable mechanical properties. New gamma titanium aluminide alloys and an appropriate fiber could offer an improved TMC for use in intermediate temperature applications (400-800 C). The purpose of this investigation is the evaluation of a gamma titanium aluminide alloy with nominal composition Ti-46.5Al-4(Cr, Nb, Ta, B)at.% as a structural material in future aerospace transportation systems, where very light-weight structures are necessary to meet the goals of advanced aerospace programs.Johnson, W.
