Published on the occasion of Jonathan Horowitz's first solo exhibition in a UK institution, this catalogue combines newly commissioned artworks for Dundee Contemporary Arts and works from the past two decades of the artist's practice. Self Portraits in Mirror #1 is an accompaniment to Jonathan Horowitz's show of the same name at Gavin Brown Enterprises in 2011. These paintings are inspired by a series of mirror paintings initiated by American pop artist Roy Lichtenstein in 1969 called Mirror #1. Each painting is by 19 different individuals including Horowitz. The question that underpins all of this is: how can one make a self-portrait using the mirror of another's self-portrait?

The Leftover Paint Abstractions are made from hundreds of layers of paint, built up over time in splattered dots and drips. From a distance, optical melding creates a field of color. On closer view, a dense weave of hundreds of thousands of dots becomes visible, revealing a methodology that owes as much to Pointillism as Abstract Expressionism. In addition to its optical quality, the accumulated paint forms a highly textured surface, like an otherworldly, mountainous terrain.
