Bradford en Harper komen samen als tieners. Ze komen allebei uit huizen uit de hogere middenklasse. De ouders van Bradford hadden het echter moeilijk toen hij werd ontslagen vanwege een ongeluk. Wanneer hij Harper ontmoet, vertelt hij haar dit alles en zij, die veel tijd doorbrengt in het gezin van Bradford, leert hoe ze hetzelfde moet doen. Het jonge paar raakt verloofd en besluit dat ze een groot huis willen, maar dat zich natuurlijk niet kunnen veroorloven voor hun minimumloon, dus bedenk een plan hoe het te krijgen. Het idee kwam bij hen toen Harper ruzie kreeg met haar ouders om hen te vertellen dat zij zowel hun huis als hen bezat omdat het adres op hun rijbewijs stond. Dus speurden ze door de stad, en besloten welk huis ze zouden willen hebben, ontdekten dat een echtpaar van middelbare leeftijd en twee jonge volwassen kinderen daar woonden, gingen naar het rijbewijsbureau en veranderden het adres op hun rijbewijs in dat van de huis dat ze wilden. Daarna pakten ze hun spullen in een gehuurde verhuiswagen, reden naar het huis, parkeerden de verhuiswagen, gingen naar de deur en dwongen zich een weg naar binnen, zeggend dat het hun huis was. De oorspronkelijke huiseigenaren, Nick en Nora, verhuizen uiteindelijk het huis uit, huren een advocaat in en vechten tegen het jonge paar om hun huis terug te krijgen. Het kost wat tijd, dus ondertussen vernietigt het jonge paar dingen en claimt het de rechten van de kraker.

Bradford and Harper get together as teenagers. They are both from upper middle-class homes. However, Bradford's parents had some hard times when he was laid off due to an accident. Bradford learned from his father how to beat the system and get what he wanted without working for it, and to have others feel sorry for him. When he meets Harper, he tells her all this, and she, spending a lot of time at Bradford's family home, learns how to do the same. The young couple become engaged, and decide that they want a big house, but of course, can't afford it on their minimum wage jobs, so devise a plan of how to get it. The idea came to them when Harper got into an argument with her parents telling them that she owned their house as well as them because the address was on their driver's license. So they scoured the city, and decided which house they would like to have, discovered that a middle-aged couple and two young adult children lived there, and went down to the license bureau and changed the address on their driver's license to that of the house they wanted. Then they packed up their belongings into a rented moving van, drove to the house, parked the moving van, went to the door, and forced their way in, saying it was their house. The original homeowners, Nick and Nora, end up moving out of the house, hiring an attorney and fighting the young couple to get their house back. It takes some time, so meanwhile the young couple is destroying things, and claiming squatter's rights. The twist to the story is....

Psychoanalysis really should not exist today. Until a few years ago, most of the evidence suggested that its time was drawing to a close, and yet psychoanalysis demonstrated remarkable resilience in the face of criticism, alongside significant resurgence over the course of the last years. In "Conservative and Radical Perspectives on Psychoanalytic Knowledge: The Fascinated and the Disenchanted" psychoanalyst and philosopher Aner Govrin describes the mechanisms of sociology within the psychoanalytic community which have enabled it to withstand the hostility levelled at it and to flourish as an intellectual and pragmatic endeavour. He defends the most criticized aspect of psychoanalysis: the fascination of analysts with their theories. Govrin demonstrates that fascination is a common phenomenon in science and shows its role in the evolution of psychoanalysis. Govrin argues that throughout its history, psychoanalysis has successfully embraced an amalgam of what he has defined and termed "fascinated" and "troubled communities." A "fascinated community" is a group that embraces a psychoanalytic theory (such as Bion's, Klein's, Winnicott s) as one embraces truth. A "troubled community" is one that is not satisfied with the state of psychoanalytic knowledge and seeks to generate a fundamental change that does not square with existing traditions (such as new psychoanalytic schools, scientifically troubled communities and the relational approach). It is this amalgam and the continuous tension between these two groups that are responsible for psychoanalysis' rich and varied development and for its ability to adapt to a changing world. Clinical vignettes from the work of Robert Stolorow, Betty Joseph, Antonino Ferro and Michael Eigen illustrate the dynamic by which psychoanalytic knowledge is formed. An Evidence-Based Critique of Contemporary Psychoanalysis assesses the state of psychoanalysis in the 21st century. Joel Paris examines areas where analysis needs to develop a stronger scientific and clinical base, and to integrate its ideas with modern clinical psychology and psychiatry. While psychoanalysis has declined as an independent discipline, it continues to play a major role in clinical thought. Paris explores the extent to which analysis has gained support from recent empirical research. He argues that it could revive its influence by establishing a stronger relationship to science, whilst looking at the state of current research. For clinical applications, he suggests while convincing evidence is lacking to support long-term treatment, brief psychoanalytic therapy, lasting for a few months, has been shown to be relatively effective for common mental disorders. For theory, Paris reviews changes in the psychoanalytic paradigm, most particularly the shift from a theory based largely on intrapsychic mechanisms to the more interpersonal approach of attachment theory. He also reviews the interfaces between psychoanalysis and other disciplines, ranging from "neuropsychoanalysis" to the incorporation of analytic theory into post-modern models popular in the humanities. An Evidence-Based Critique of Contemporary Psychoanalysis concludes by examining the legacy of psychoanalysis and making recommendations for integration into broader psychological theory and psychotherapy.
