En José Canalejas Méndez coincidieron dos vocaciones que marcarían su devenir personal y político: la del jurista y la del humanista. Su formación le proporcionó una marcada tendencia a la ductilidad, la habilidad negociadora, la proyección a largo plazo de sus objetivos y la capacidad para superar conflictos íntimos y políticos, buscando alternativas mediante un esfuerzo de imaginación y, en ocasiones, de renuncia a posturas personales, en aras de alcanzar un acuerdo con el oponente. Canalejas fue hombre de convicciones, pero capaz de reconocer el error y de sobreponerse a él. Su asesinato en 1912, junto con el de Eduardo Dato en 1921, supuso la frustración de la esperanza de inyectar savia nueva al régimen de la Restauración, y la eliminación de uno de los más grandes estadistas que ha tenido España desde los inicios del régimen constitucional. Esta obra constituye una aproximación novedosa a los tesoros de nuestra primera pinacoteca.
