'El porvenir de la filosofía' recoge el texto original del discurso que José Ingenieros pronunció bajo el título de 'Proposiciones relativas al porvenir de la filosofía' al ser admitido como miembro en la Academia de Filosofía y Letras de la Universidad de Buenos Aires. Vio la luz por primera vez en 1918. En el texto, José Ingenieros desarrolla una exposición de la crisis de la filosofía/metafísica y las causas que la provocaron. Entre ellas identifica como la principal la 'hipocresía de los filósofos', es decir, la cobardía de los filósofos que han rehuido siempre encarar las 'creencias populares' impuestas con la verdad filosófica que saltaba a la razón. Esta hipocresía histórica desemboca en un replanteamiento de la metafísica en su fundamento, método, problemas que enuncia, el lenguaje y la construcción de pensamiento que, estima Ingenieros, solo podrá desarrollarse tras un lento proceso, a partir del siglo XXI.Esta edición de Héctor Martínez incluye una presentación al texto elaborada por el editor y se acompaña de dos reseñas de la época, una de Quintiliano Saldaña y otra, más breve, de Mariano Ibérico. 'El porvenir de la filosofía' continua la recuperación de la obra filosófica de José Ingenieros iniciada con el volumen 'Ética funcional' (2019) que compilaba 'El hombre mediocre', 'Hacia una moralidad sin dogmas', 'Las fuerzas morales' y la conferencia 'La moral de Ulises'.
