Excerpt from Joseph and Asenath: The Confession and Prayer of Asenath, Daughter of Pentephres the Priest Potipherah suggests to Asenath a project of marrying her to Joseph. This she rejects with an outburst of scornful anger and returns to the tower, but on seeing Joseph enter the court she declares him to be a son of God and is struck with remorse. Joseph having seen her at the window, She is called down to greet him, and, when he is told that she is his host's virgin daughter, he accepts her as his sister; but, when she is ordered to kiss him, refuses to allow her to approach as being an idolater, but prays for the blessing of God upon her. He then departs, promising to return a week later, and Asenath spends the intervening time in fasting and humiliation and finally in prayer. The archangel Michael then visits her and announces that she shall be Joseph's wife, after which he produces a miraculous honeycomb from which he gives her to eat, and then says that she has now eaten the bread of life and'drunk the cup of immortality and been anointed with the chrism of incorruption. After Michael's departure Joseph is announced, and Asenath goes out to meet him, and, Joseph having also had a visit from the archangel, they meet as affianced bride and bridegroom. Potipherah then returns from his country house, where he has been spending the interval, and states that he will summon the guests to the marriage-feast immediately, but Joseph says that he must return to Pharaoh and obtain Ase nath's hand from him.1 The marriage is then celebrated at the king's court, Jacob and his family come to Egypt and Asenath is presented to them. Joseph and Aseneth (alternatively spelled Asenath) is an ancient apocryphal expansion of the Book of Genesis's account of the patriarch Joseph's marriage to Aseneth. According to Genesis 41:45 ("And Pharaoh called Joseph's name Zaphnathpaaneah; and he gave him to wife Asenath the daughter of Potipherah priest of On. And Joseph went out over [all] the land of Egypt."), Pharaoh gives Aseneth, the daughter of Potipherah (Pentephres in the Septuagint) priest of to Joseph as a wife. Genesis 41:50-52 ("And unto Joseph were born two sons before the years of famine came, which Asenath the daughter of Potipherah priest of On bare unto him. 51. Joseph, the ever-devout Jew, begins his new career living in a world of polytheists where he seems to be tolerated with more grace than he gives to those "abominations" who are neither Jewish in the racial or religious sense. Aseneth is the daughter of the chief priest of the sun god in Heliopolis. She is a spoiled, arrogant child who disdains all men, and even disrespects her father. Aseneth is cursed with beauty, which draws men to her like flies to a carnivorous plant. Even the son of Pharaoh wants her for himself and plots to get her. But Aseneth loathes and despises men, until she sees Joseph, who refuses to even touch her because she does not worship the same god as he. It is within this setting we begin the wonderful and uplifting tale of Joseph and Aseneth.

There is very much written about the young Joseph, son of Jacob by his favorite wife Rachel. We have read in the scriptures how he was hated by his brothers and how they eventually sold him to traders traveling to Egypt. We know well this story and how he fared in the new country. We also know about Potiphar's household and his infamous wife and how she falsely accused him and Potiphar had to send him to the local palace prison.During his years in prison he had the ability to interpret dreams. Finally, we know how he was elevated to a high position by the current Pharaoh, his marriage and the two sons, Manasseh and Ephraim, who were given blessings by their grandfather Jacob.What we don't know is enough about his wife, Asenath, who was later named Manos, and her life and spiritual conversion after being visited by an angel. She was a very special woman and God knew her greatness and prepared her to be Joseph's wife.She was not Egyptian in looks or by family and would not have been from the Twelve Tribes. I believe she was descended from Heber, father of the Hebrews, a descendant of Shem and ancestor of Abraham. As such she would be the perfect wife of a prophet following her own conversion.
