The Slave Bible was published in 1807. It was commissioned on behalf of the Society for the Conversion of Negro Slaves in England. The Bible was to be used by missionaries and slave owners to teach slaves about the Christian faith and to evangelize slaves. The Bible was used to teach some slaves to read, but the goal first and foremost was to tend to the spiritual needs of the slaves in the way the missionaries and slave owners saw fit.

The account of Joseph's life in the Bible begins with a seventeen year old being sold off as a slave and concludes with that same slave becoming second-in-command of all ancient Egypt. If you have always wanted to know what it would have been like for Joseph in the context of that time in Egypt, then this book is for you. Following the Biblical narrative carefully and with research into ancient Egypt of the time, I paint a picture of what Joseph would have experienced. Everything included in this story has a foundation either from the Bible itself or from historical texts. This book carries you to ancient times. The story begins in Bethel when Joseph was a little boy, and ends with reconciliation with his family. In between are the experiences of his eventful life: the dreams from God, being sold to merchants, the journey to Egypt, life as a slave, in the prison, his promotion by Pharaoh and life as a leader. The Bible account is stirring on its own, but here you will get more detail and new perspectives. What you read will intrigue, inform, move and inspire you. It is a beautiful testament of God's faithfulness.

The main message of this book is recognition of the undeniable fact that continental Africans played a key role in selling their fellow Africans to slavery. The book pleads for forgiveness from an African perspective. The biblical story of the selling of Joseph to slavery by his own brothers was used to look at black slavery in the Americas, a similar historical injustice which occurred in the modern era of human history. I am trying to extract from this tragedy something that has not been addressed much before: a healing message of hope for forgiveness. Not only the message urges sincere admission of wrongdoing and forgiveness on the part of the transgressors, but it also calls for the due recognition of the accomplishments of black slaves and their descendants in the Americas, Europe, and Africa. Finally, I am introducing a concept of moral reparations as a first step to achieve everlasting healing for historical injustices, like black slavery, which oppose groups of people not merely one group and a government.

This landmark commentary marshals the vast experience and brilliant insights of one of today’s most revered Old Testament scholars. To those familiar with the work of Bruce K. Waltke, the significance and value of Genesis will be instantly apparent. Others who are unfamiliar with Waltke have only to read the first few chapters to understand why he has earned the reputation of a scholar’s scholar, and why this masterful volume stands like a monolith among Old Testament commentaries. Exploring the first book of the Bible as "theological literature," Waltke illuminates its meanings and methods for the pastor, scholar, teacher, student, and Bible-lover. Genesis strikes an unusual balance by emphasizing the theology of the Scripture text while also paying particular attention to the flow and development of the plot and literary techniques--inclusion, irony, chiasm, and concentric patterning--that shape the message of the "book of beginnings". Genesis Models the way to read and interpret the narratives of the book of Genesis Provides helpful exegetical notes that address key issues and debates surrounding the text Includes theological reflections on how the message addresses our contemporary theological and social issues, such as ecology, homosexuality, temperance, evil, prayer, and obedience Addresses critical interpretive issues, such as authenticity, date, and authorship For all the author’s formidable intellect and meticulous research, Genesis is amazingly accessible. This is no mere study tool. Lucidly and eloquently written, it is a work of the heart that helps us not only to understand deeply God’s Word in its context, but also to consider how it applies to us today.
