Joseph Theurel songe à devenir missionnaire dès l'âge de 10 ans. Ordonné prêtre, il est envoyé dans la région de Hanoï en 1853. Les chrétiens y sont persécutés. Des persécutions de plus en plus atroces à mesure que les Français tentent de les arrêter par des interventions sporadiques et maladroites. Joseph, missionnaire énergique et exemplaire, sera obligé de fuir bien des fois. Sous cette pression, il voudra remettre en cause la pratique missionnaire. Mais, une fois la tolérance religieuse arrachée à l’empereur du Viêt Nam, Joseph, devenu évêque, maintiendra une organisation où les missionnaires verrouillent la hiérarchie. C’est pour lui le moyen le plus efficace de parvenir à son but impératif : sauver le plus d’âmes possible en les baptisant. Il meurt à 39 ans. Suivre Joseph, c’est suivre l’aventure héroïque d’un missionnaire emblématique du XIXe siècle. Replacé dans son contexte, son itinéraire montre à quel point notre conception de Dieu, de l’Église et de ses sacrements est conditionnée par une époque. De 1981 à 2018 : Agriculteur dans une exploitation de grande culture spécialisée dans les productions légumières de plein champ. De 1999 à 2017 : Président de Prim’allia, coopérative agricole de mise en marché de légumes regroupant 150 agriculteurs produisant 280 000 tonnes de légumes. De 2014 à 2016 : DU « Culture et spiritualité d’Asie » à l’Institut de Science et de Théologie des Religions de l’Institut Catholique de Paris sous la direction d’Ysé Tardan Masquelier. De 2018 à 2022 : DS Science et Théologie des religions à l’Institut Catholique de Paris sous la direction de Catherine Marin. This is the sixth volume to be dedicated to the pioneering linguistic work produced by missionaries in Asia. This volume presents research into the documentation, study and description of Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese and Tamil. It provides a selection of papers which primarily concentrate on the Society of Jesus and their linguistic production, but also covers linguistic works written by Franciscans, the Order of Discalced Carmelites and works of other religious institutions, such as the Propaganda Fide and the Missions Étrangères de Paris. New insights are provided regarding these works and their reception among European scholars interested in these ‘exotic’ languages and cultures. Each text is placed in its historical context and various approaches to some of the most important descriptive problems faced by these linguists avant la lettre are analyzed, such as the establishment of an adequate romanization system, the description of typological features of these Asian languages, such as tonality and aspiration in Chinese and Vietnamese, agglutination and derivational morphology in Japanese and Tamil, and, pragmatics, in particular politeness in Japanese. This volume not only looks at methodology and descriptive techniques, but also comments on missionary linguistic policies in Asia and offers articles of interest to historiographers of linguistics, historians, typologists, descriptive linguists and those interested in translation studies.

Các bạn đang đọc một quyển sách tìm về cội rễ tiếng Việt của một người phi hàn lâm, chỉ có tình yêu ngôn ngữ mẹ đẻ của mình dẫn lối. Con số khoảng 3000 âm khai mở ở đây là ước tính gần đúng. Bảng excel còn sót rất nhiều âm/chữ đã tìm ra trong văn bản, đó là chưa kể một chữ Nho thường có rất nhiều âm và nghĩa. Dù đã cố gắng hết sức, áp dụng chân kiềng “âm – nghĩa – dụng” rất ngặt nghèo và khắt khe để đánh giá nhưng sai lỗi và nhầm lẫn do chủ quan là không thể nào tránh khỏi. Hơn nữa kho từ vựng Việt ngữ quá đồ sộ, một bộ óc không thể nào làm chủ hết được. Có người phê bình tác giả nhiều lúc sa đà vào phạm trù tư tưởng trong một quyển sách viết ra với mục đích tìm hiểu gốc rễ âm từ tiếng Việt. Thật ra, như triết học Marx Lenine đã nói rõ, khi lượng đủ lớn sẽ làm chất chuyển biến. Nếu chúng tôi chỉ khảo sát dăm ba khía cạnh thì đấy đơn giản là ngữ học thuần túy. Nhưng đến con số ngàn ở mọi mặt cuộc sống, sinh hoạt, lịch sử, văn hóa, phong tục, tôn giáo… tự dữ liệu sẽ liên kết và chuyển hóa rồi nêu bật tư tưởng. Việc cuối cùng chúng tôi làm là trích dẫn những đánh giá gần gũi với nhận thức mới của mình trong kho tàng học thuật nhân loại, dưới các tên tuổi mà ai cũng biết như Huntington, George Orwell chẳng hạn. Chúng tôi tin rằng trong vòng 50 năm nữa, người Trung Quốc sẽ phải nghiên cứu kĩ Việt ngữ nếu muốn tỏ tưởng cổ Hán ngữ, từ đặc điểm giọng nói trở đi. Giọng bắc mà điển hình là giọng Hà Nội thừa hưởng tiếng nói của giới quan lại trí thức Đại Đường li khai lập quốc, rồi lại được làm giàu thêm bởi dân tị nạn chính trị văn hay chữ tốt từ Nam Tống, vì vậy nó rất sang trọng. Khi này khi khác, vì nhu cầu củng cố quốc gia dân tộc non trẻ, người ta đã cố tình che giấu điều này. Tuy nhiên mọi thứ sắp thay đổi một cách toàn diện. Trung tâm chính trị, khoa học, văn minh và kinh tế thế giới đang xoay trục về lại đại lục Á Âu, nhưng không còn sự giới hạn địa lý như thời Hán và thời Đường. Tiếng Việt Nam khi ấy không còn là tài sản riêng của dân tộc Việt nữa. Nó chứa đựng những hóa thạch vô giá và trường tồn của hẳn một nền văn minh tiền khai xán lạn.
