Eichendorff's prose masterpiece - a picaresque account of the wanderings of a young man who leaves home after a row with his father, and who eventually finds love with the girl of his dreams - is one of the best-known classics of German literature.Deeply imbued with the style and sentiment of German Romanticism, and philosophical and poetic in its approach to nature and existence, Memoirs of a Good-for-Nothing is at once an exhilarating romp and a lively portrayal of nineteenth-century ideals.

This study, the first full-length investigation in English of the structure of Eichendorff's novels, begins by examining Romantic literary theory and its significance for Eichendorff's conception of the «Roman». His two novels, Ahnung und Gegenwart and Dichter und ihre Gesellen, are then analysed in the context of both the theory and practice of the Romantic novel, and of Eichendorff's other works. His conception of the «Roman» is shown to correspond closely to Romantic theory and to find expression in his novels, which reflect in their structure both the seeming confusion of life and its underlying, God-given order, and thereby point beyond themselves to a transcendent significance.

A survey of criticism of the 19th-century German writer Joseph von Eichendorff (1788-1857) Until the 1950s most critics tended to treat Eichendorff as a kind of light-hearted raconteur who spun tales of warmth and action having little aesthetic or philosophical depth. Critics who read his works more closely then began to view him as a thinker whose works concealed, behind seemingly simpler constructs, profound insights into the human condition. Marxist critics were especially drawn to Memoirs of a Good-for-Nothing, finding in that ostensibly frivolous novella a romantic critique of capitalism. This work, the first thorough survey of Eichendorff criticism in any language, and written for the general reader of literature as well as the specialist, is a mustfor college and university libraries.
