The Way of Improvement Leads Home traces the short but fascinating life of Philip Vickers Fithian, one of the most prolific diarists in early America. Born to Presbyterian grain-growers in rural New Jersey, he was never quite satisfied with the agricultural life he seemed destined to inherit. Fithian longed for something more—to improve himself in a revolutionary world that was making upward mobility possible. While Fithian is best known for the diary that he wrote in 1773-74 while working as a tutor at Nomini Hall, the Virginia plantation of Robert Carter, this first full biography moves beyond his experience in the Old Dominion to examine his inner life, his experience in the early American backcountry, his love affair with Elizabeth Beatty, and his role as a Revolutionary War chaplain. From the villages of New Jersey, Fithian was able to participate indirectly in the eighteenth-century republic of letters—a transatlantic intellectual community sustained through sociability, print, and the pursuit of mutual improvement. The republic of letters was above all else a rational republic, with little tolerance for those unable to rid themselves of parochial passions. Participation required a commitment to self-improvement that demanded a belief in the Enlightenment values of human potential and social progress. Although Fithian was deeply committed to these values, he constantly struggled to reconcile his quest for a cosmopolitan life with his love of home. As John Fea argues, it was the people, the religious culture, and the very landscape of his "native sod" that continued to hold Fithian's affections and enabled him to live a life worthy of a man of letters.

Philip Vickers Fithian's "Journal and Letters of Philip Vickers Fithian: A Plantation Tutor of the Old Dominion, 1773-1774" offers a compelling glimpse into plantation life in 18th-century Virginia through the eyes of a tutor. Written in an engaging, personal style, the journal meticulously details Fithian's experiences, observations, and reflections on the societal dynamics of slavery, education, and the early American landscape. His candid and articulate letters encapsulate the era's tensions, both socially and politically, against the backdrop of impending revolutionary change, making the work not only a personal narrative but also a critical historical document that aids in understanding the complex nature of American colonial life. Philip Vickers Fithian, a well-educated young man from New England, served as a tutor to the children of a prominent Virginia planter. His own upbringing and the stark contrasts he encountered in Virginia's agrarian society informed his writing. The influences of Enlightenment thought and his encounters with the realities of plantation culture propelled Fithian to investigate issues of power, morality, and human dignity, ideas that resonate throughout his work. Fithian's journal and letters are an essential read for anyone interested in American history, education, and the social complexities of the pre-Revolutionary South. This text not only enriches our understanding of the era but also invites readers to reflect on the values and challenges of a society on the brink of transformation.

The Orchestral Revolution written by Emily I. Dolan and has been published by Cambridge University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-01-17 with Music categories.
The Orchestral Revolution explores the changing listening culture of the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Delving into Enlightenment philosophy, the nature of instruments, compositional practices and reception history, this book describes the birth of a new form of attention to sonority and uncovers the intimate relationship between the development of modern musical aesthetics and the emergence of orchestration. By focusing upon Joseph Haydn's innovative strategies of orchestration and tracing their reception and influence, Emily Dolan shows that the consolidation of the modern orchestra radically altered how people listened to and thought about the expressive capacity of instruments. The orchestra transformed from a mere gathering of instruments into an ideal community full of diverse, nuanced and expressive characters. In addressing this key moment in the history of music, Dolan demonstrates the importance of the materiality of sound in the formation of the modern musical artwork.
