The Journal of Character Education serves an audience of researchers, policy makers, teacher educators, and school practitioners concerned with the development of positive character in young people. The Character Education Partnership (CEP) defines character education as efforts to help young people develop good character, which includes knowing about, caring about, and acting upon core ethical values such as fairness, honesty, compassion, responsibility, and respect for self and others. The editors and the CEP view character education as a comprehensive and interdisciplinary term that reflects CEPs Eleven Principles of Effective Character Education. These principles call upon schools to address character education in their overall school climate, academic curriculum, extra-curricular activities, inter-personal relationships, and school governance. These efforts are school-wide and should touch every student and all school personnel. They can include both comprehensive school reform and more specific school-based efforts such as service learning, life skills education, conflict resolution and violence prevention, social and emotional learning, education for the prevention of drug/alcohol abuse, sex education, education for civic virtue and social responsibility, and the development of moral reasoning. Of clear relevance also are multicultural education, social justice education, the ethics of environmental or technology education, religious education, and the like. The Journal of Character Education has for over a decade been the sole scholarly journal focused on research, theory, measurement, and practice of character education. In this issue of the Journal of Character Education we return to something foundational and introduce something new. The foundational element is a set of six independent scholarly manuscripts by a mix of emerging and established scholars. We are pleased to introduce a new feature of the Journal of Character Education in this issue, namely a section we are calling simply “Opinion.” We began the JCE with an exclusive focus on publishing scholarship because there was no scholarly journal that focused on character education. Over time we realized that we wanted to speak about practice and particularly to practitioners as well. Hence we created a section we call “Voices” to present innovations and perspectives representing the “voices” of exemplary practitioners of character education. Now we introduce the “Opinion” section that will allow us to publish perspectives from leading authorities in the field that might be more provocative. We would love to hear responses to either or both opinion articles and are working on plans to share such responses, perhaps on one of our related websites. At this point, we plan on publishing more opinion articles, and for now, by invitation. However, we are always willing to consider unsolicited articles for possible inclusion in the JCE.

The Journal of Character Education is the leading source of cutting-edge knowledge about character education research, theory, practice, and opinion. We define character education broadly to encompass all educational approaches designed to nurture students’ knowledge, motivation, skills, and behavior concerning all four aspects of character: moral, performance, civic, and intellectual. The Journal publishes manuscripts that report research relevant to character education, conceptual articles, and book reviews that provide theoretical, historical, and philosophical perspectives on the field of character education as it is broadly defined above.
