Excerpt from Journal of Psycho-Asthenics, Vol. 21: Devoted to the Care, Training and Treatment of the Feeble-Minded and Epileptic, Published Quarterly at Faribault, Minnesota The main object of this paper is to present some statistics on a number of questions relating to the care of the feebleminded. The findings will be discussed with reference to possible remedies. Officials of State Institutions are somewhat familiar with many of the conditions the figures reveal. The public in general, however, is imbued with views that are wholly at variance with most of them, or lacks information entirely. The main question concerns the different percentages of the total number of existing feeble-minded that are at present in different kinds of institutions and parts of society. So far as there exists a clearly defined policy as to what the State should aim to do in the care of the feeble-minded the facts here will show in what degree the State is accomplishing its chief aim. The second question to be considered will be how this distribution of the feeble-minded in society is affected by grade of feeble-mindedness, sex, age, and legislation. A third question that will be considered is that of the frequency with which the feeble-minded leave institutions permanently after they were once committed. And fourth, how this is affected again by the same factors of grade, sex, age and legislation. The determination of the percentage of the existing feebleminded that are in different institutions, and outside, involves a determination of the total number existing in the country. Excerpt from Journal of Psycho-Asthenics, Vol. 19: September, 1914; Devoted to the Care, Training and Treatment of the Feeble-Minded and Epileptic The aim of the extension department of the Training School at Vineland, New Jersey, is to assist in any movement looking toward adequate care for all feeble-minded. The department wishes to give information and advice, not to undertake the task of directing the establishment of institutions, colonies, etc. Many experimental steps have been tried out at the Training School and in New Jersey, but this department has no desire to use these except as demonstrations of what may be done. Its distinctive work is publicity and propaganda and it desires to make widely known the best that is now being done in every state. Although the object to be obtained has become well defined, the beginnings were rather hazy and the various steps have been somewhat those of the opportunist. As early as 1896 it was seen that the best place to recognize the feeble-minded was in the public schools, and in that year an attempt was made to get a report of the numbers in the schools of Allen County, Indiana. Unlike studies which confine psychologism to the second half of the nineteenth century, and to an explicit claim of psychology as a 'Grundwissenschaft' during that period, this work attempts to trace psychologism's emergence in Greek antiquity, in hedonistic tendencies of the Renaissance, and in British Empiricism. Thus, psychologism figures as a generic concept, embracing a variety of both positivistic and idealistic arguments concerning the localization of normative sciences, particularly aesthetics and literary theory, in psychological space. This study also considers the implicit psychologism of even those psychoaesthetic theories which claimed to be against the exclusive status of psychology. In their actual treatment of aesthetic and literary facts, such theories inadvertently did indeed resort to psychologistic arguments. The position from which I have chosen to look at psychologistically committed aesthetics and literary theory is essentially phenomenological. The author seeks to present psychologism as a central tendency of psychoaesthetics as well as to assert critically psychologism's basic assumptions.
