Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2002 im Fachbereich Politik - Thema: Deutsche Außenpolitik, Note: 2,0, Technische Universität Dortmund (Institut für Politikwissenschaft), Veranstaltung: Seminar Vereinigung von BRD/DDR und gesamtdeutsche Außenpolitik., Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Dieser Text hebt rechtliche, funktionale und kulturelle Unterschiede des Journalismus in BRD und ehemaliger DDR hervor. „DDR und Medien – ein schwieriges Kapitel deutsch-deutscher Beziehungen.“1 Knapp fünf Monate vor dem Fall der Berliner Mauer diskutierten Wissenschaftler, Politiker und Journalisten in Westdeutschland während eines Podiumsgesprächs anlässlich der Verleihung der Theodor-Wolff-Preise über die medienpolitischen Zustände in der Deutschen Demokratischen Republik. Brandaktuelles Thema zu diesem Zeitpunkt: Das Massaker auf dem Tiananmenplatz am 4. Juni 1989 in China, geschehen zwei Tage vor Beginn der Diskussionsrunde. Aus Angst vor Unruhen im eigenen Land schwiegen sich die DDR-Medien über die Hintergründe des Aufstands in Peking nahezu aus und stellten dessen militärische Niederschlagung in einem zwielichtigen Zusammenhang dar. Die DDR steckte in einem Dilemma, „denn die unter Staatsaufsicht stehenden Medien des deutschen Teilstaates bewegen sich in einer anderen Wirklichkeit – oder eher Unwirklichkeit“, so Claus Detjen, damals Hauptgeschäftsführer des Bundesverbandes Deutscher Zeitungsverleger, „als sie verkündeten, die Bevölkerung der DDR habe Verständnis für die Abrechnung des Pekinger Regimes mit den ́Konterrevolutionären`, dann fragte man sich einmal mehr, von wem eigentlich die Rede war.“2 [...] Freie Meinungsäußerung und Medienfreiheit sind abhängig vom Spielraum, den ihr Verfassung und Politik zubilligen. This book addresses a topic in journalism studies that has gained increasing scholarly attention since the mid-2000s: the coverage and evaluation of arts and culture, or what we term ‘cultural journalism and cultural critique’. The book highlights three approaches to this emerging research field: (1) the constant challenge of demarcating what constitutes the ‘cultural’ in cultural journalism and cultural critique, and the interlinks of cultural journalism and cultural critique; (2) the dialectic of globalization’s cultural homogenization and the specificity of local/national cultures; and (3) the need to rethink, perhaps even redefine, cultural journalism and cultural critique in view of the digital media landscape. ‘Cultural journalism’ is used as an umbrella term for media reporting and debating on culture, including the arts, value politics, popular culture, the culture industries, and entertainment. Therefore some of the contributions this book apply a broad approach to ‘the cultural’ when theorizing and analyzing the production and content of cultural journalism, and the professional ideology, self-perception, and legitimacy struggles of cultural journalists and editors. Other contributions demarcate their field of study more narrowly, both topically and generically, by engaging with very specific sub-areas such as ‘film criticism’ or ‘television series.’ This book was originally published as a special issue of Journalism Practice.

What media content attracts audiences across cultures and what does not? What does the cross-cultural audience demand depend on? The author takes a new approach to understanding cultural barriers to the success of foreign media content by analyzing the entry strategies of Time Warner, Disney, Viacom, News Corporation, and Bertelsmann with regard to China, India, and Japan in terms of their respective localization efforts. In-depth interviews with companies' representatives give an insight into how they view the need for locally-produced media in these countries. The author develops and employs the Lacuna and Universal Model that provides a new theoretical classification of reasons for the cross-cultural success and failure of media content, as well as the Vertical Barrier Chain that locates cultural barriers in the wider context of legal, political, and economic barriers to successful entry into foreign media markets.
