Exploring how Ulysses imitates the human mind at work, connecting close readings to psychological theories of Joyce’s time In this book, John Gordon uses historically oriented close readings to demonstrate that Ulysses is a book that mimics the workings of the human mind. Gordon highlights James Joyce’s exceptional ability to capture and represent lived experiences, showing how Joyce’s writings display the ways specific minds interact with their environments. Ulysses is portrayed here as having its own evolving consciousness. Sensational Joyce is the first book on Joyce’s psychology to engage deeply with theorists beyond Freud, Jung, or Lacan. Gordon explains how Joyce used other psychological theories, like William James’s ideas on stimulus and response, Gestalt psychology, John Watson’s behaviorism, and trauma research. The book also includes discussions of phenomena considered experimental at the time, such as telepathy, telekinesis, precognition, and spiritualism. Gordon examines the characters of sensitive intellectual Stephen Dedalus and advertising professional Leopold Bloom, following the book’s centers of consciousness into the visionary, hallucinatory, and prophetic final chapters. Gordon highlights how Joyce’s unique writing style transforms sensations and stimuli into thoughts and responses. As Ulysses progresses, the sensational—meaning sensory data—becomes sensationalistic. In tracing the contemporary theories of psychology evidenced in the novel, Sensational Joyce presents many new and original interpretations that can be applied to other works by Joyce, especially Finnegans Wake. A volume in the Florida James Joyce Series, edited by Sam Slote

The Cambridge Companion To The Irish Novel written by John Wilson Foster and has been published by Cambridge University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2006-12-14 with Literary Criticism categories.

The Irish novel has had a distinguished history. It spans such diverse authors as James Joyce, George Moore, Maria Edgeworth, Bram Stoker, Flann O'Brien, Samuel Beckett, Lady Morgan, John Banville, and others. Yet it has until now received less critical attention than Irish poetry and drama. This volume covers three hundred years of Irish achievement in fiction, with essays on key genres, themes, and authors. It provides critiques of individual works, accounts of important novelists, and histories of sub-genres and allied narrative forms, establishing significant social and political contexts for dozens of novels. The varied perspectives and emphases by more than a dozen critics and literary historians ensure that the Irish novel receives due tribute for its colour, variety and linguistic verve. Each chapter features recommended further reading. This is the perfect overview for students of the Irish novel from the romances of the seventeenth century to the present day.

James Joyce And German Theory written by Barbara Laman and has been published by Fairleigh Dickinson Univ Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2004 with Literary Criticism categories.

James Joyce's aesthetic theories, as explicated by Stephen Dedalus in A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man and in the Scylla and Charybdis chapter of Ulysses, have generally been assumed to be grounded in Aristotle and Aquinas. Indeed, Stephen mentions those thinkers especially in Portrait, at the same time as he rejects Romantic notions. This book investigates the extent to which Joyce's theories as well as his practice, beginning with his critical writings and Stephen Hero, are indebted to early German Romanticism. The allusions, affinities, and analogies, as well as differential relationships between the Joycean oeuvre and texts of Johann Wolfgang Goethe, Friedrich Schiller, Friedrich Schiegel, and Novalis are often palpable, sometimes tentative, but clearly present in most of his works, including Finnegans Wake.
