This study seeks to provide empirical evidence on the economic impacts that are generated through the Geographical Indication (GI) process beginning with the official recognition of a GI and the steps that follow. It focuses on the food sector and reviews nine cases, offering a variety of national contexts and local value chains. The approach, considers “operational” GI processes: those in which a code of practice (or specifications) is defined and the GI is used and managed by a collective organization. The synthetic outcome of these nine cases show the positive effect of GIs on the economy and confirm the importance of specification that is well defined and implemented through producers’ coordinated action.

El innegable éxito de la identidad corporativa de la Federación Nacional de Cafeteros-Juan Valdez, el cual le ameritó ubicarse dentro de las diez marcas más importantes del mundo (según la revista Times), se interpela desde las voces de dos organizaciones del Cauca. En efecto, este libro busca analizar, dentro de otras aristas, dos corrientes importantes en el devenir de las marcas: su propósito corporativo y su incidencia social. Al respecto, llama la atención el gran despliegue de publicaciones y estudios alrededor de la estrategia de mercado Juan Valdez, las cuales se ubican desde corrientes disciplinares económicas y publicitarias; sin embargo, son escasas las investigaciones que reflexionan esta imagen dentro del plano sociopolítico. De este hecho nace la motivación de analizar esta identidad con respecto a los procesos de producción, circulación y apropiación de la representación Juan Valdez, al igual que las identidades de las organizaciones Central Cooperativa del Cauca –Cencoic, y la Federación Campesina del Cauca -FCC-. Estas dos últimas entendidas como espacios organizativos que se rigen bajo alternativas hacia el desarrollo, las cuales estampan otras realidades. De tal forma, se coloca sobre la mesa dos dimensiones de la producción gráfica en la que convergen y marginan las vivencias, intereses y prospectos de los actores caficultores.
