Juan Valera nació en 1824 en el seno de una familia aristócrata. Se licenció en Leyes y trabajó como diplomático, dedicándose a la literatura por placer y por vocación, aunque también aspiró a conseguir fama y dinero con ella. Animado por el éxito de su primera novela, Pepita Jiménez (1873), sigue cultivando este género hasta 1879 con Doña Luz, en lo que podríamos llamar su primera etapa como novelista. En 1895 inicia la segunda con Juanita la Larga, una vez abandonada definitivamente la carrera diplomática. Juanita la Larga narra un tema clásico, el amor entre un hombre y una joven que se enfrentan a las adversidades para defender su amor.Juanita la Larga es una de las últimas novelas de Juan Valera. Vio la luz por primera vez en 1895, cuando el escritor contaba ya con setenta años. Es un retrato colorista y vívido de una sociedad pueblerina de la Andalucía de mediados del siglo XIX. Valera nos la presenta como un reflejo de sus recuerdos de niñez, envuelta en un halo bucólico y en parte idealizada, ya que nos describe un pueblo en continua ebullición, con fiestas locales habituales y una estrecha relación entre todos sus habitantes. No obstante, el carácter intrínseco real de muchos municipios se recoge en la obra, y el autor da muestras de conocerlo bien: la hipocresía imperante, el qué dirán, el buen o mal nombre de las familias, etcétera. En la novela se le concede a esta localidad el nombre de Villalegre, y en ella se ha querido ver un reflejo de los lugares en los que Valera habitó en su infancia, Doña Mencía o Cabra, pueblos cordobeses.
