This book is a fascinating historical account of Judaism in the Roman Empire, focusing on the period from 76 BC to 140 AD. The author explores the challenges faced by Jews living in Rome during this time, including political instability, cultural conflicts, and the persecution of Jewish communities. The text is notable for its nuanced portrayal of the relationship between Jews and Romans, demonstrating that the two groups had complex and multifaceted interactions, rather than a simple relationship of oppression and resistance. The book is a valuable resource for anyone interested in ancient history, Judaism, or Roman culture. Excerpt from Judaism at Rome: B. C. 76 to A. D. 140 Many years ago the writer of this collected some extracts from Christian anticipations of Rome's destruction. While doing this, he noticed that similar views had prevailed among Jews and Romans. Investigation convinced him that the former were the originators. This implied Jewish influence on the Roman mind, which he at first underrated, regarding it as confined to moments of excitement and as affecting merely the populace. Only by degrees did he discover how continuous and powerful it had been, and that it was directly due to the superiority of Judaism over heathenism. Debarred from night study, the writer has pursued his work amid daily avocations and interruptions. He could have wished to rearrange and revise some portions of it yet further; but to have attempted this might have endangered publication under his own supervision, and would have precluded attention to other duties, and to the completion of another short work which, if eyesight permit, he would thankfully finish. It seems morally impossible that Judaism and Greek culture, which were driven out with such difficulty from Italy, should have made no impression upon Oriental nations. Examines a variety of primary sources in its exploration of repression of the Jews under the Roman emperor Claudius. Looks at the accounts of Gentile witnesses to pre-Claudian repression of the Jewish cult at Rome, the tendentious portrayal of the Jews and their cult, pre-Claudian repression from between the lines of the Jewish sources, witnesses accounts of the Claudian expulsion of Roman Jewry, the etymology of the Greek name Chrestus and its relevance to Jews and Christians, and Claudius as portrayed by his predecessors and contemporaries. Dixon points out in his introduction that readers will learn as much about Claudius and his administration of the Empire as they will about Roman repression of Jews. It was long believed that Roman Jews lived in complete isolation. This book offers a refutation of this thesis. It focuses on the Jewish community in third and fourth-century Rome, and in particular on how this community related to the larger, non-Jewish world that surrounded it. Jewish archaeological remains and Jewish funerary inscriptions from Rome are examined from various angles, and compared to pagan and early Christian material and epigraphical remains. The author has shown great comprehensiveness, thoroughness, and accuracy in examining this epigraphic evidence. He also discusses the enigmatic legal treatise called the Collatio. This volume proposes a new way in which the relationship between Jews and non-Jews in late antiquity can be studied. As such, it is an important and useful addition to the literature on Roman Jewry in the middle Empire.
