Taking a fresh look at what the Greeks and Romans thought about Jews and Judaism, Peter Schafer locates the origin of anti-Semitism in the ancient world. Judeophobia firmly establishes Hellenistic Egypt as the generating source of anti-Semitism, with roots extending back into Egypt's pre-Hellenistic history. A pattern of ingrained hostility toward an alien culture emerges when Schafer surveys an illuminating spectrum of comments on Jews and their religion in Greek and Roman writings, focusing on the topics that most interested the pagan classical world: the exodus or, as it was widely interpreted, expulsion from Egypt; the nature of the Jewish god; food restrictions, in particular abstinence from pork; laws relating to the sabbath; the practice of circumcision; and Jewish proselytism. He then probes key incidents, two fierce outbursts of hostility in Egypt: the destruction of a Jewish temple in Elephantine in 410 B.C.E. and the riots in Alexandria in 38 C.E. Asking what fueled these attacks on Jewish communities, the author discovers deep-seated ethnic resentments. It was from Egypt that hatred of Jews, based on allegations of impiety, xenophobia, and misanthropy, was transported first to Syria-Palestine and then to Rome, where it acquired a new element: fear of this small but distinctive community. To the hatred and fear, ingredients of Christian theology were soon added--a mix all too familiar in Western history.

Antisemitism never disappeared in Europe. In fact, there is substantial evidence that it is again on the rise, manifest in violent acts against Jews in some quarters, but more commonly noticeable in everyday discourse in mainstream European society. This innovative empirical study examines written examples of antisemitism in contemporary Germany. It demonstrates that hostility against Jews is not just a right-wing phenomenon or a phenomenon among the uneducated, but is manifest among all social classes, including intellectuals. Drawing on 14,000 letters and e-mails sent between 2002 and 2012 to the Central Council of Jews in Germany and to the Israeli embassy in Berlin, as well as communications sent between 2010 and 2011 to Israeli embassies in Austria, Switzerland, Belgium, England, Ireland, the Netherlands, Sweden, and Spain, this volume shows how language plays a crucial role in activating and re-activating antisemitism. In addition, the authors investigate the role of emotions in antisemitic argumentation patterns and analyze Òanti-IsraelismÓ as the dominant form of contemporary hatred of Jews.

The years 1881-82 witnessed almost simultaneous waves of pogroms in eastern Germany (western Prussia, Pomerania, and Posen) and southern Russia; in both countries, the pogroms followed periods of reforms that improved in some way the situation of the Jews. Examines the responses of four mainstream newspapers - the conservative Protestant "Neue Preussische Zeitung" (known as the "Kreuzzeitung"), the Catholic "Germania", the semi-official "Norddeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung", and the Jewish "Allgemeine Zeitung des Judentums". With the exception of the "AZJ", the papers indirectly justified and decriminalized the violence, which was a type of covert expression of opposition to Jewish emancipation and to the growing role of Jews in society. The "AZJ" tended to depict the pogroms, both in Russia and Germany, as planned and organized from above rather than as spontaneous popular outbreaks. The conservative non-Jewish papers, while deploring collective violence, discussed the extermination of the Jews as a possible option for the solution of the "Jewish question". Thus, they prepared the transformation of the seemingly "civilized" pre-1918 antisemitism into the post-1918 antisemitism that included violence both in word and deed.
